New NBA Free-Throw Rule Explained

The 2010 BCS National Championship Report

Dan SmithJan 10, 2010

Is it too much of a stretch to say the 32-day gap between the Big XII title game and the BCS title game caused Colt McCoy's injury? Other than that, there is no flaw in the BCS that caused the injury that changed the title game after five plays.

So of the dozens of flaws in the BCS, the injury to Colt McCoy was just a fluke of bad luck for the Texas Longhorns.

Alabama rolled to a big first half lead by running the ball with Mark Ingram. Greg McElroy managed the game, and it was a good thing the Tide did not need him to throw for the win. The Texas secondary kept the Alabama receivers, led by Julio Jones, bottled up all game long.

Marcell Dareus made a huge play on a Garrett Gilbert shovel pass for a back-breaking touchdown late in the second quarter.

A Texas comeback was stopped late in the game, when Eryk Anders forced a fumble on the freshman QB playing for the injured Colt McCoy.

What a season for a plus-one game. Boise State and Alabama playing on the same field to leave college football with only one undefeated champ.

That is the last flaw of the BCS I want to bring up, the lack of closure at the end  of the season.

Sure, Alabama is the best team from the best conference, and it seems like they are the best team in the country.

Colt McCoy's injury reminds us all that polls are nice for before and after the game. The game is the variable, and once the ball is kicked off anything can and will happen.

Here are my final lists for another college football season. The number of teams in my top 20 are in parenthesis for the conference power rankings.

Conference Power Rankings

1. SEC (4)

2. Big 10 (4)

3. Mountain West (3)

4. Big XII (2)

5. Big East (2)

6. Pac-10 (1)

For the final top 20, I have to jeer my picks from before the bowl season so the number in parenthesis is where I thought they would end up.

My Final Top 20

1. Alabama (4)

2. Florida (6)

3. Boise State (8)

4. Texas (1)

5. Ohio State (5)

6. TCU (3)

7. Iowa (7)

8. Cincinnati (2)

9. Oregon (9)

10. Penn State (14)

11. Georgia Tech (11)

12. Virginia Tech (12)

13. LSU (10)

14. BYU (19)

15. Nebraska (-)

16. Pittsburgh (16)

17. Wisconsin (-)

18. Utah (-)

19. Central Michigan (-)

20. Mississippi (-)

One Final Thought

I might as well promote my playoff idea one last time.

1. Go back to an 11-game schedule

2. No preseason polls (the first poll would be the BCS poll in October)

3. No conference title games (don't need them with a playoff)

4. Top eight teams in the BCS play an eight-BCS bowl game tournament (Rose, Orange, Fiesta, Sugar, Cotton, Holiday, Gator, and Sun)

5. Regular season ends in mid-November

6. First two Saturdays in December are the quarter- and semifinal rounds of the BCS Bowl Tournament (names like December Drama and December Dream come to mind).

7. Monday of the third week in December starts the bowl season for teams ranked ninth and lower who have won six games (you can even call it Capital One Bowl Season)

8. Jan. 1 is the national title game and will always be played in the Rose Bowl.

And my preseason pick for next year's BCS champ is Ohio State.
