'Lane Kiffin Rule' Supported by LSU HC to Prevent Coaches from Changing Schools During CFB Season
LSU football coach Lane Kiffin says he is in support of a congressional bill aiming to stop the kind of midseason head coaching departure he made from Ole Miss last season.
The Associated Press' Eddie Pells reported in May members of the U.S. Senate were introducing a bipartisan bill with a provision known as the "Lane Kiffin rule" that would block midseason coaching changes in the NCAA.
"I hope that's some way for future coaches, they're not put in that situation," Kiffin told Pells while speaking to reporters Thursday during SEC Football media days. "The NFL, you're never put in that situation, because of the calendar and because of the rules of movement within seasons. So I do hope for future people that's fixed, so you're not in that same predicament."
The NFL currently prohibits teams from talking to coaches under contract with other organizations during the season.
Had that rule been in place in the NCAA, Kiffin would not have been able to consider offers from Florida and LSU while still coaching Ole Miss last season.
Kiffin coached the Rebels to an 11-1 record before departing ahead of the playoffs after Ole Miss officials reportedly told him he couldn't coach in the College Football Playoff is he accepted a job with another program, per ESPN's Mark Schlabach.
When speaking during his media availability Thursday, Kiffin compared pushing back those coaching negotiations to after the playoff to pushing the transfer portal to January.
"[That] really was a player issue, too, and then we fixed that with moving the portal date back... so hopefully some way they fix it for coaches, too," Kiffin said.
The Kiffin provision was introduced to the Senate on June 2 as part of the Protect College Sports Act of 2026, one of multiple Congressional attempts to provide the NCAA with antitrust protections while establishing federal NIL regulations. After committee review, the bill was scheduled for future consideration by the full Senate.
