It Is Racist to Accuse Manny Pacquiao of Using Steroids
It is racist to accuse Manny Pacquiao of using steroids.
If Pacquiao was any other race—African American, Latino, or White—we would say "Wow, Manny is a monster in that ring," and that would be it.
But it is the fact that Manny is Filipino, the fact that he is Asian, that makes many racist and ignorant people doubt his amazing accomplishments.
Historically, Asian men have been stereotypically perceived as weak, passive, and even non-sexual. It is evident in many old Hollywood films—actually, it is even evident still today, in 2009, in films that depict Asian males as the weakest, most inferior males on the planet.
Being Asian American and growing up in the Midwest I have seen, lived, and endured some of the most ridiculous ignorance and racism that can be imagined.
One time, one of my high school teachers actually wanted me to write a term paper about the PROS of cloning so we could genetically enhance Asian male babies with the genetics of "superior" Caucasian male babies.
Yes folks, these were the types of teachers I had to tolerate in my ignorant, racist Midwest high school for four horrendous years.
You have Asian American men like myself who do not fit into any of those ridiculous Asian male stereotypes—some of you more lucky ladies can back me up on this claim, wink—but unfortunately, you never see good looking smooth Asian guys like me on TV, in films, in the media. Instead, you see the same ridiculous stereotypical images of Asian males reinforced over and over again.
So then you have the most racially motivated sport: boxing. The sport where at one time the champion was the most famous, revered, male figure in the world. It says a lot about who is on top of the world.
Meaning, when they see a smaller Filipino, Asian man, brutally beating up and destroying a larger, White, Black, or Latino man, then of course that will cause controversy and confusion; for it does not sit right with the historical racist stereotypes of Asian males.
Surely we must feel better about ourselves by discrediting Manny; saying he is on steroids so we can eat and sleep better at night.
While we are at it, lets examine Yao Ming's legs. Surely the man's walking on stilts, because no Chinese man stands above 4'11", right?
