🚨 Mitchell Headed to 1st Conference Finals

Ranking the ACC After Week 14 of College Football Action.

Jeffrey FannDec 6, 2009

Saturday, the ACC made some amends for last week's dismal out-of-conference performance. In an absolute classic of a championship game, Georgia Tech outlasted the Clemson Tigers 39-34. They were the only two ACC teams that played this weekend, so there won't be too much to write about the other teams.

This game had it all, incredible individual performances, big plays on offense, and big plays on defense. It really was a showcase game for the ACC.

Now the only thing that remains is each team's bowl destination.

1) Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (11-2, 7-1) - Last Week 1
Well Paul Johnson has done it. He has brought Georgia Tech its first major bid since 1966, and he's done when many thought his triple option offense couldn't succeed at a BCS school. QB Josh Nesbitt can't get enough credit for calmly leading the Jackets to the eventual game winning score. Jonathan Dwyer ran hard, Demaryius Thomas made plays at WR, Derrick Morgan was a load at DE, and Scott Blair was superb at K going 4 for 4. Therein lies the difference in the game with Clemson. C.J. Spiller was spectacular, but Georgia Tech just had more weapons. I'm still not a fan of Dave Wommack as defensive coordinator, and I wonder about his future.
2) Virginia Tech Hokies (9-3, 6-2) - Last Week 4
I think the Chick-Fil-A bowl will select the Hokies even if they've been to Atlanta twice this year. I understand the SEC opponent may be Tennessee, but a Virginia Tech vs Georgia game would sell more tickets. Clemson is also a possibility for Atlanta.
3) Clemson Tigers (8-5, 6-2) - Last Week 4
C.J. Spiller made a case for the Heisman Trophy with an unbelievable 233 yard rushing performance. He'd get my Heisman vote, but he won't win it. He certainly deserves to be in New York for the presentation though. I had to go ahead and move Clemson ahead of Miami because they came within 90 seconds of being No. 1 on this list, and they did beat Miami several weeks ago. DC Kevin Steele has to wonder what got into his defense that last few weeks. They've given up 74 points in the last two weeks. Due to the fiasco the Gator could create by selecting Florida State, the Tigers could fall all the way to the Music City Bowl.
4) Miami Hurricanes (9-3, 5-3) - Last Week 3
The Canes deserve the Gator, but as we've mentioned, the Gator may make a mess with a FSU selection. I think they end up in the Champs Sports Bowl. That's not a bad trip for the Hurricanes to make.
5) North Carolina Tar Heels (8-4, 4-4) - Last Week 3
Do the Heels end up in their usual bowl destination of the Meineke Care Bowl in Charlotte?
6) Boston College Eagles (8-4, 5-3) - Last Week 6
Boston College can't catch a break and play out west in the Emerald Bowl. That's not fair for an 8-win season. It all depends on the Gator Bowl selection where BC goes.
7) Florida State Seminoles (6-6, 4-4) - Last Week 7
I'm sorry but I don't think Florida State should be playing in the Gator Bowl leap frogging several more deserving teams. As great as Bobby Bowden is, Bowl games are a reward for players not coaches even Hall of Fame coaches. We know its big business when it comes to Bowl games, and the Gator is looking for ticket sales, but I don't have to like it.
8) Wake Forest Demon Deacons (5-7, 3-5) - Last Week 10
The Deacs have a huge hole to fill with the departure of Riley Skinner.
9) North Carolina State Wolfpack (5-7, 2-6) - Last Week 9
Tom O'Brien can't be happy about how this season played out. They did beat UNC last week to soften the blow of a disappointing year.
10) Duke Blue Devils (5-7, 3-5) - Last Week 8
Would other teams out there take a look at David Cutcliffe? I wonder how he would do with better facilities, and a school with a better football tradition. I'd look at him if I needed a coach.
11) Virginia Cavaliers (3-9, 2-6) - Last Week 11
Al Groh is done at Virginia. It looks like Richmond coach Mike London is the leading candidate.
12) Maryland Terrapins (2-10, 1-7) - Last Week 12
Ralph Freidgen and the Terps have a lot of work to do this offseason. This season was a disaster.
