2009 College Football Playoff Bracket We Won't Be Seeing
Later today the country will find out which teams have been selected to the Bowl Championship Series. While I do not doubt for a minute Alabama's right to be in the championship game, there will be no end to the argument of who the Tide should face.
Imagine if college football were like other sports and had something called a playoff. How would an eight team postseason tournament look?
To be eligible for my bracket, you had to either win your BCS conference, or be one of two at-large selections. My at-large selections, based on their undefeated seasons, are Texas Christian and Boise State. (I'm sorry, Florida. My bracket doesn't reflect conference strength. And it saves you the embarrassment of losing to 'Bama twice.)
Quarterfinals: All games either Jan. 1 or 2
Orange Bowl: #8 Georgia Tech at #1 Alabama
Fiesta Bowl: #5 Boise State at #4 Cincinnati
Sugar Bowl: #7 Ohio State at #2 Texas
Rose Bowl: #6 Oregon at #3 TCU
Semifinals: All games either Jan. 8 or 9
Georgia Dome: #4 Cincinnati at #1 Alabama
Cowboy's Stadium: #3 TCU/#6 Oregon at #2 Texas/#7 Ohio State
National Championship Game to be played on Martin Luther King Monday.
But I guess we would rather have the current system.
Of course everyone asks about what to do with the other non-BCS bowls.
The answer is simple. Keep them.
They are a nice reward for the teams that had decent seasons, and just like now, those bowls would have no real meaning.
What about all the academics screaming about missed class time?
Seeing as only four teams will still be playing when the semifinals come around (part of my playoff is requiring all bowls such as the GMAC bowl to move back before Jan. 1), that will enable the other 117 teams' "student-athletes" to be in school and not miss class.
The TV ratings for this would be through the roof, as opposed to that eventual TCU-Boise St. game that will be forced upon us later today.
Anyway, won't waste anymore of your time. We won't see something like this for 20 years, but when we do, I'll take Alabama and the points.
