NBA Finals: Amazing Happens in Boston

Ron JohnsonJun 17, 2008

Kobe said it wasn't over. Phil said it wasn't over. On behalf of the entire Boston Celtics organization, I ask the Los Angeles Lakers—how do you like these apples?!

On a night in which the phrase used all through the postseason was "Where Amazing Happens," the Boston Celtics gave Red Auerbach a reason to light up that cigar, as they hoisted up championship No. 17, and gave Kevin Garnett a good reason to cry at season's end.

In the end, the Boston Celtics handed the Lakers a 131-92 defeat to give head coach Doc Rivers his first NBA Championship in his coaching career. As for Garnett, he added 26 points and an emphatic, "Anything is Possible," screaming to the heavens and shed a waterfall of tears.

And who could blame him?!

After racking up multiple all star appearances, multiple single awards, and after coming up short so many times, he led the charge along with his running mates Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. Pierce finished with 17 points while Allen added 26 as the Celtics enjoyed playing the underdog in this year's Finals.

Just like the Red Wings, Boston came into these Finals with adversity and the entire world picking against them.

Who could beat Kobe? Who can stop Phil from making history? Who would stop these mighty Lakers? The answer to all three questions—Boston. Kobe won MVP? Big deal! Who cares! He came up short again! It's not over? It is now!

It got so bad that Kobe didn't even wait until the game was over before he threw in the towel. He left with about nine minutes remaining in the game. The problem with this issue—the Celtics fans were already making sure he felt unwanted. With about five minutes left in the game, the fans at Boston Garden sang a song for Bryant: "Nah Nah Nah Nah! Nah Nah Nah Nah! Hey Hey Hey! Goodbye!"

I couldn't agree more, Boston. I couldn't agree more.

Speaking of Bryant, he got 22 points in an attempt to help his team, but when the bench for Boston came into the game, it was clear that the Lakers didn't even care anymore. And, why would they? They became the victims of an almost 40-point bitch slapping from both Boston's starters and members of the bench.

All season, I heard how good Kobe was.

I got hell for defending my ex-girlfriend when she called out Kobe. Now I know that I will suffer the same fate, and personally, I won't care. Kobe deserves this. All off-season, he whined and bitched like a virgin that he deserved better than what he got. You got Phil Jackson, three rings, and an acquittal. What more do you need, you jackass?!

In any event, this isn't about Kobe. Or Phil. Or even the Lakers and millions of people who were seriously wrong on this pick. This is about the Celtics preparing to take that "Trophy Ride".

The same one that Tom Brady and the Patriots took. The same one that Manny, Big Papi, and the Red Sox took. The same one that hometown boy John Cena took when he won the WWE Championship for the first time.

If only for one season, the Celtics are the Kings of the Court, not the Lakers. Kobe now takes a backseat to KG. And Pierce. And Allen. And especially Doc.

For Phil Jackson's sake, I hope he had enough pride in his own black heart to congratulate Doc instead of making excuses. Hopefully, Kobe walked right over to Garnett, and said, "The first one is always the best."

Hopefully, the Lakers learned that nothing is etched in stone...ever. The Giants beat the odds in Super Bowl XLII. The Bulldogs beat the odds in the Sugar Bowl. The Tigers beat the odds in the BCS Championship. And, Kansas beat the odds in the NCAA Championship. Now Boston has done it again. Like an old Britney Spears song, it happened again.

The Year of the Underdog is back, and in full force! This is why we play the game. This is why they play the game. This is why we watch and cheer. For moments like this, we play, we watch, and we celebrate. With that said, you can't help but enjoy this moment. Whether you're a Lakers fan, a Celtics fan, or a bandwagon fan, go out and celebrate!

Because there's nothing better than having a Good Will Hunting moment in the very region that made the infamous line worth saying over and over again.

So, I ask Kobe and Phil the million dollar question—do you boys like apples? Well, the Celtics just beat you guys by 39 in their backyard, won the NBA Championship for the 17th time, while you guys just lost to the Eastern Conference again in this decade.

So Lakers, City of Angels, State of California and Gov. Arnold—how do you like 'dem apples?

No answer required. We already know the answer. Congratulations, Boston, and live it up. You earned this one. Patriots, Red Sox, and Celtics make three. Does this make the city of Boston the ultimate dynasty of this decade? I would think so.
