Would It Be Posible To Create a New World Sportscar Championship?

In 1993, one of the biggest calamities in the history of motorsport occurred: The World Sportscar Championship collapsed.

The collapse may have actually been the intention of the FIA. But whether you believe it or not, it was without a doubt the FIA introducing the 3.5-liter Group C formula that ultimately destroyed it.

The WSC hadn't quite been a fully worldwide championship for some time, of course, but it was the last one there ever was, and to see it gone was truly sad. In its waning days, the 3.5-liter Group Cs gave us some cars that would have been exciting to see further developed, such as the Allard J2X-C.

But the worldwide nature of sportscar racing was what has been truly missed since then. Regional championships have managed to fill in people's interests with some exciting racing since then, but a world championship is still something that many would be excited to see.

The closest we get today are the 24 hour races at Le Mans, which attracts several teams from Europe, Asia and the USA, and Daytona, which has come to attract drivers from nearly all forms of racing.

Would it be possible to revive a World Sportscar Championship? The politics of the matter would make it impossible, but if what if politics weren't an issue? Could we make one that is otherwise completely feasible?

One of the biggest arguments against a new worldwide championship is the expense of it. Not enough teams would be interested enough to spend the money for it, and the races would not have large enough fields to make for an exciting championship. The most optimistic estimates figure four to five teams per class would be the most we could expect.

But is there a way to make an exciting WSC on those numbers? I say there is...How, you ask, do we add cars to a field when so few want to run the expense? We don't...We add the WSC field to another race.

That's right: Dual-purpose races. Races already existing in a given championship that double as WSC events.

Which races would be the best? This would be my ideal schedule:

24 Hours of Daytona

12 Hours of Sebring

1000km of Spa

24 Hours of Le Mans

1000km of Monza or Silverstone

Any one race from the Asian Le Mans Series should it take off

Petit Le Mans

And one more...Somewhere not close to the previous ones.

Classes? LMP1, LMP2, FIA GT1, Daytona Prototypes, LMGT2, and GT3(with Grand-Am GTs included). Non-LM classes would not be run at Le Mans unless as a shorter support race.

Wishful thinking? Very much so. We'll likely never see DPs and LMPs on the same racetrack. But we can dream. With the DPs attracting more attention each year with international stars running them at the DP's premiere event, it'd be criminal to leave them off a revived WSC. I'd probably still demand some redesigning of their cockpit area before allowing them, though.

If politics wouldn't prevent it, this would be the greatest way to do it. I think that if only three cars per class contested the full WSC, we'd still get great action out of it by attaching the events to other races.

And if the idea sold a lot of tickets and got a lot of viewers, you can be certain that before long more people would want the attention of competing in the full WSC.
