Onetime Weekly: June, Week Three
A weekend of surprise results on all sporting fronts, from motor sport to cycling.
The Comrades Marathon took place yesterday—and again, it was won by the Russians in both the men's and women's sections.
I would like to congratulate Pat Freeman on her 20th Comrades win, and extend the same to Tink Tivers on her second and Greg Freese on his first.
It also seems that Dope De France is starting with its crap again. If only these so-called sportsmen would stay off the drugs and stop cheating, maybe I will start to respect it again. But who can trust them?
Cokehead Tom Boonen, will take part in his first race since admitting to taking drugs—he is still, however, banned from taking part in the Tour De Farce.
SA’s Robbie Hunter won the fourth and final stage in Portugal. This has set team Barlow World up well for a good chance of finishing strong in France in July.
The SBK this weekend was a cracker. Hagawon both races and the second race on a red flag after being overtaken by his teammate Troy Corser. The reason for the race stoppage was because of rain on the bottom half of the circuit.
Bernie Ecclestoneis worried that the Jewish community will pull all their sponsorship from the F1 teams due to Max Mosley’s sex romp withhookers dressed up as Nazis. The teams have not got a contract signed with F1, as the current contract expires at the end of the season.
Who knows? Maybe we will get a new Formula next year.
Honestly, I think it is time for both those old fools to quit and leave F1. Time for young blood, fresh faces, and the drivers to race for speed with no restrictions.
In other news, super-babe Danica Patrick has been asked to test drive for Honda at the end of the season. David Coulthard is not happy about it, saying a driver with boobs in the paddock will just distract the mechanics. I guess he just does not want to be beaten by a woman
On the rugby front, New Zealand is back, and gave England a good and solid thumping. Yes the score line flatters in 37-20, but the Poms where hammered in their own game, up front. They have made four changes for next week, but this will still give the Black the same result. The Boks and the Blacks are going to be the top sides this year in World Rugby.
The luck of the Irish was not with them on Saturday in Melbourne. Robbie Deans must be very concerned heading into the Tri-Nations, as he does not have a front row. The only way they could win ball was through illegal scrimmaging. Mat Dunning and Al Baxter—who became the most cap front ranker in Australia on Saturday—struggled against an Irish pack that was thumped the week before in Wellington. The BEAST will be waiting for them and then the boys will be sorted from the men.
The Boks came up against a wounded Dragon in Pretoria. Although the Welsh played with guts, it was our poor game plan that let them into the match. Players must learn that you kick from your try line and inside 22m. When given a penalty in kickable range, take the points.
This is test rugby and we win test matches any way we can. Even if it is 3-0 against NZ in New Zealand, a win is a win.
Percy must return to 15, Steyn must go 13 and Ndungane anyone to go to 14. Schalk should be back—so, thank goodness, that should be the end of Watson for a while. Also, Kankowski should get a start at Eight this week against the Italians. Victor will captain the Bok while Smit returns to France for a club game. The final score was 37-21 to the Boks
On the soccer scene, Bafana lost to Sierra Leone in Free Town 1-0. What does Sierra Leone have? Nothing, but they play with pride, guts, and honor.
It looks like we will not qualify for the next Nation’s Cup. This does not bode well for the 2010 World Cup. Do you think they can replace SA with another European side that may actually get somewhere?
In Euro 2008 it looks like Spain, Croatia, Germany, and Holland will be your top bets for the Semis. I am hoping for a Spain-Holland final.
The Tiger is back. After not playing for nine weeks, he took the US Open at Torrey Pine on the seventh hole yesterday. Tiger and Rocco Mediate ended up on even par after four rounds andhad to play an 19-hole playoff culminating in sudden death on Monday. Guess who lost?
At the Stella, Nadal won his first ever grasscourt title, beating world No. 3 Djokovic, and sending out the first warning shots to Federer. It will be interesting if he has the savvy to beat Federer on his favorite surface. We will wait and see
Varsity First XV felt the wrath of the incompetence of the PMB referees. Our game was blown short by nine minutes so the next team could start at 20H00—only for the Collegian Drakensberg game to start at 20H15. Disgraceful, but nothing unusual coming from PMB.
What I find funny is that my counter part feels we were robbed—and speaking to the Collegians and Drakensberg coaches after their game, they feel the same. PMB referees suck and Durban refs rock. Well done, Durban.
Our final scores Waratha’s 14-Varsity 10. In the second teams, Varsity won 20-0. Well done, boys!
Until next week, enjoy the soccer, rugby, and other sport. Cheers!
Think beyond the horizon and you will find success!
