2008 Fantasy Football's Best Offenses
A quarterback has had a great season 20 times since the beginning of the fantasy football era (2000). Which Offensive Coordinators run the friendliest offenses, for QBs to excel for your fantasy football team?
Josh McDaniels: Offensive Coordinator, New England Patriots: The Josh McDaniels/Charlie Weiss offense is based on stealing all of the other team’s signals during the first half. Then in the second half, when you know what play the defense is running before the play begins, it makes things much simpler for your QB.
This offense has produced one great season for a QB (Tom Brady in 2007). In 2008, Tom Brady will be running this offense, but thanks to Eric Mangini snitching to Roger Goodell, Brady's fantasy football numbers probably won't be as great as 2007.
Jason Garrett: Offensive Coordinator, Dallas Cowboys: Garrett's offense is balanced, using multiple formations and getting everyone involved. This offense has produced one great season for a QB (Tony Romo 2007). After one season, Garrett has established himself as one of the top offensive coordinators in the league and Romo's numbers should be even better in his second season under Garrett.
Tom Moore: Offensive Coordinator, Indianapolis Colts: Moore's offense is based on calling a play and then having Peyton Manning change the play at the line of scrimmage while Moore grabs a hot dog. It doesn't matter what Moore calls, Manning is just going to change it anyways.
This offense has produced six great fantasy football seasons by a QB (Peyton Manning). In 2008, expect the Peyton Manning/Tom Moore offense to produce their seventh great season for a fantasy football QB.
Sean Payton: Head Coach, New Orleans Saints: Doug Marone is the Offensive Coordinator for Payton who is a pass-happy madman living in Mike Martz's shadow. This offense is two-for-two producing great seasons for a fantasy football QB (Drew Brees 2006-07).
Payton was also the Giants offensive coordinator in 2000 when Kerry Collins had a good season, leaving no doubt that this is a very friendly offense for QBs. Expect more of the same in 2008.
Bob Bratkowski: Offensive Coordinator, Cincinnati Bengals: Bratkowski was the man behind Carson Palmer's great season in 2005. That is the only season in which Bratkowski's three-wide balanced attack has produced a good QB, so don't get too excited for '08.
Scott Linehan: Head Coach, St. Louis Rams: Linehan has an insane strategy: If there are eight men in the box, pass and if there are seven, run! This simple strategy produced one of the greatest seasons ever for a QB in 2004 (Daunte Culpepper). While only producing one great fantasy football season for a QB, this is still good news for Marc Bulger to be a sleeper in 2008.
Al Saunders/Mike Martz: Martz is now Offensive Coordinator for the 49ers, and Saunders is Offensive Coordinator for the Rams. Their offense produced two MVP awards for Kurt Warner in St. Louis, and Saunders went on to Kansas City where Trent Green had a great season in 2004.
This offense has produced three great fantasy football seasons for a QB, and in Martz's first season in Detroit Jon Kitna had his best season. This is more good news for Marc Bulger in St. Louis, and in San Francisco, expect Shaun Hill or Alex Smith to have a decent year.
West Coast Offense: This offensive strategy has produced six great seasons by a fantasy football QB from a variety of Bill Walsh disciples. Brad Childress in 2004 (Donovan McNabb), Mike Sherman in 2004 (Brett Favre), Mike Shanahan in 2004 (Jake Plummer), Steve Mariucci in 2000, and 2001 (Jeff Garcia), and Dennis Green in 2000 (Daunte Culpepper).
While not having a great season since 2004 is a concern, the variety of coaches and QBs who have succeeded in this system is outstanding and four of the top 12 QBs last year played in a West Coast Offense.
In 2008, Jason Campbell, Jeff Garcia, Matt Hasselbeck, Donovan McNabb, Tarvaris Jackson, Matt Schaub, Aaron Rodgers, and Jay Cutler will all be running the West Coast Offense and are in a good position to have a great season.
