Seriously. Why Wouldn't a Playoff Work In College Football?

Shaun YoungNov 17, 2009

Today is one of only two times in the season that I will EVER watch college basketball. The other is the NCAA tournament.  Please don't ask me why I don't watch college basketball other than those two times; because I will give you my answer right now. I'm not a basketball guy.  But I am sitting here thinking, there's a playoff system for basketball & you know what, the last time I checked, it works pretty damn well, wouldn't you agree? A 64-team playoff to determine the NCAA champion. The only computers are for RPI, no BCS. I think it works perfect.

So why; year after controversial argumentative year does the BCS exist in college football? Seriously... someone tell me; because I... for the life of me, cannot figure it out & probably never will. I have no problems at all with the AP & Coaches poll; but why do we have BCS rankings? Apparently win/loss records just don't do it anymore, plus it would be difficult with multiple undefeated teams. I'm not supporting congress & their decision to look into & force a change of the system. YES, there needs to be a change; but does it REALLY need to come from the same people who passed a healthcare bill that faced opposition from what seemed like every person in the U.S. & who spends taxpayer dollars for their own personal use? No I didn't think so. So now that my disapproval of congress is out of the way, here's what I would like to propose.

1. If you expect to play for a National Championship. You CANNOT play squash games. Sorry Florida, Texas, Alabama & every other contender. Yes, I'm including my Buckeyes. Do you really expect the nation to believe that you are a national title contender by dropping 62 on Charleston Southern, FLORIDA? 53 on North Texas, ALABAMA? 70 on Southeast Missouri State, CINCINNATI? Not so fast my friend (please don't sue me), dropping that many points on a lowly 1-AA or 1-A team should hinder your chances. Make use of the 3 or 4 non-conference games. Urban, I want your Gators going against a Pitt team. BK, I want to see the Bearcats go against USC for example. Play the best teams, prove that you belong. That isn't just for those teams, ANYONE who believes that they have a shot at a national title, go for it.

2. I would propose a field of 16. No one is exempt. If a non-BCS team is ahead of say... Oklahoma in the rankings at the end of the season, so be it. Do a bracket like how they have it for basketball.  Break it down to.... boy, I want to say 24 teams as an example; but let me try 4 teams per region, for a 16 team playoff

Region A would be the Rose Bowl Region
USC
Ohio State
Penn State
Stanford

Then you just throw in four teams for three other regions. Again, just an example. So then those teams play it out & the winner of each region would be the winner of a bowl game. Example: Ohio State beats Stanford to win the Rose Bowl
So then you continue the cycle for the other teams & you would have something like the winners of the bowl games facing each other like this....

Ohio State (Rose Bowl) v. LSU (Sugar Bowl)
Cincinnati (Orange Bowl) v. Florida (Fiesta Bowl)

Then for your national title game, it would be like

Ohio State (Rose Bowl) v. Cincinnati (Orange Bowl)

I can only dream that would happen; but you get my drift hopefully.

3. This one is really bizarre. Why do regular-season stats carry over into a "postseason"? Just a personal thing I guess.

I realize there are people who are content with the BCS & those people, in the eyes of some may be considered nuts. Same goes for the people who want a playoff.  This almost seems like it would work. So there's my take.

P.S.- Enjoy the crappy bracket. It's like close to 3 in the morning & I can't sleep
