Masters 2020: Updated Odds, Betting Tips for Golf's Latest Major

Max MarcovitchNov 9, 2020

August National in November. No spectators for those Sunday roars. Early sunsets. It seems like "a tradition unlike any other" might not be a slogan befitting of this year's Masters Tournament.

It feels like years since Tiger Woods lifted his arms in triumph last year, winning a tournament few thought he'd ever sniff again. And yet Woods coming to Augusta to try to defend his title feels almost like an afterthought heading into this week.

Nonetheless, the final major champion of 2020 season will be crowned this week at a Masters like none we've seen before.

So how can you make some money? Here are a few tips to consider:

Lean on length

It's hardly a novel observation in modern golf to say that distance trumps all. Your next question will be: Can that translate to Augusta National, though? The smart wager would be in the affirmative.

In contrast to Winged Foot, Augusta is notorious for not growing the rough, which will allow bombers to take different angles off the tee. And with wet weather in the forecast, that premium on length will only be exacerbated. Players such as Scottie Scheffler, Matthew Wolff, Cameron Champ and Bryson DeChambeau will be worth monitoring.

Institutional knowledge matters

There's a train of thought in the golf betting world that course knowledge tends to be overrated. But Augusta might be the exception.

Nobody has won the Masters on their debut in over 40 years. And there are some players with long-shot odds who know this course front and back, such as Bubba Watson, Adam Scott and Patrick Reed.

Bet with your head, not your heart

If you, like many, are tuning into the Masters but don't watch golf regularly, you will recognize some household names. But the odds of Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia, Rickie Fowler, Jordan Spieth and maybe even Tiger Woods competing this week are slim.

Woods hasn't finished in the top 10 of a tournament since the Farmers Insurance Open in January. Garcia has missed the cut in eight of his last 10 major appearances.

Mickelson, while generating some buzz about becoming a Champions Tour legend, appears past his days of competing at majors. Fowler has been in something of a mid-career spiral this season, and Spieth has struggled for the past couple of years.
