Breeders' Cup 2020: Post Time, Post Positions and Friday TV Coverage

Jake RillNov 6, 2020

With five races scheduled to take place Friday at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky, the 2020 Breeders' Cup is about to begin. And it should be an exciting weekend of racing with many top horses in action.

On Friday, there will be five juvenile races for two-year-olds, each of which has either a $1 million or $2 million purse. They'll be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network, with coverage beginning at 2 p.m. ET.

This is the first time since 2015 that the Breeders' Cup is being held at Keeneland. After Friday's action, things will pick back up on Saturday with nine more races, the last of which is the Breeders' Cup Classic featuring a stacked field of top horses, including this year's winners of the Kentucky Derby (Authentic) and the Belmont Stakes (Tiz the Law).

Friday's schedule culminates with the 1 1/16-mile Juvenile, one of two races on the day that has a $2 million purse. And many eyes will be on Jackie's Warrior, the 7-5 favorite to win, per BreedersCup.com, who is expected to go on to be a contender in the 2021 Kentucky Derby.

Jackie's Warrior has won each of his first four career races. He's trained by Steve Asmussen, who is a two-time winner of the Preakness Stakes (2007 and 2009) and a former Belmont Stakes winner (2016). Asmussen has never won the Kentucky Derby, but he could have a chance next year if Jackie's Warrior continues on his current trajectory.

Last month, Jackie's Warrior improved to 4-0 with a win at the Champagne Stakes. A victory in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile could be his most impressive yet.

"He's the most accomplished [two-year-old] I've had to this point," Asmussen said, according to John Cherwa of the Los Angeles Times. "We've had some really nice ones, but he's the first to win the Saratoga Special, Hopeful [Stakes] and Champagne since Dehere did it [in 1993]. Obviously, he's a very accomplished two-year-old. We're very proud of that."

But Jackie's Warrior is going to face some tough competition on Friday evening from the other 13 horses in the Juvenile field. That includes Classier, who is the lone Bob Baffert-trained horse in this year's race.

Baffert has had an illustrious career training horses, and he's had four two-year-olds win the Juvenile: in 2002 (Vindication), 2008 (Midshipman), 2013 (New Year's Day) and 2018 (Game Winner). Could Classier upset Jackie's Warrior and join that list?

"He's lightly raced, but he could be a superstar," Baffert said, per Cherwa. "It's a tough race."

Classier debuted at Santa Anita Park on Oct. 24 and raced to victory. It should be exciting to see how he fares against Friday's competitive field.

On Saturday, the Breeders' Cup action will continue with the older horses taking the track. But Friday will be about the youngsters, and those first five races should set the tone for what is likely to be an exciting two days of racing.
