Warriors' Draymond Green: 'I Realized That We Weren't That Good' Early in Season
After five straight trips to the NBA Finals, the Golden State Warriors were the worst team in the league in 2019-20, and Draymond Green knew the season would be different fairly quickly.
"Early on, when I realized that we weren't that good, I tried to readjust my mindset and accept the reality," he said, per Scott Cacciola of the New York Times. "But losing is still losing."
Five-time All-Star Klay Thompson missed the entire year as he recovered from a torn ACL suffered in Game 6 of last year's Finals, and two-time MVP Stephen Curry played only five games after breaking his hand. The team also lost two-time Finals MVP Kevin Durant, who joined the Brooklyn Nets in a sign-and-trade in the offseason.
Meanwhile, Green started 43 games for the 15-50 Warriors this season, second only to forward Glenn Robinson III. Guys such as Alec Burks, Eric Paschall, Marquese Chriss, Jordan Poole, Damion Lee, Omari Spellman, Ky Bowman and Willie Cauley-Stein, among others, logged heavy minutes.
Green, who played in 105 playoff games the past five seasons, has most recently been seen on TNT's Inside the NBA in a guest analyst role.
Where Curry told the New York Times' Marc Stein that he dealt with "major FOMO" while watching the NBA restart in the Orlando bubble, Green said he didn't mind the "much-needed break." When he returns to the court alongside Curry and Thompson next year, the team will surely be near the top of the West once again.
