Roman Reigns Is WWE's Undisputed Top Star and More Clash of Champions Hot Takes

Kevin BergeSep 28, 2020

What was WWE Clash of Champions all about Sunday? It could be said it was about solidifying the top stars in the company. Only one championship changed hands, and Sami Zayn would tell you that he was the true champion the whole time.

Roman Reigns and Drew McIntyre solidified their title reigns with big victories. The Street Profits as well as Sheamus and Cesaro looked fairly dominant in their respective title defenses.

However, it was also a night when WWE needed to call an audible. With sudden card changes, the company had to move quickly, and it led to a flat middle section of the pay-per-view.

The show was a mess at times and not all that memorable, but certain moments will play important roles in the company's future.

These are a few major takeaways from Sunday night's pay-per-view.

Roman Reigns Is Far and Away WWE's Top Star

1 of 4

Roman Reigns did not let Jey Uso get cocky throughout their match. While the underdog almost pulled off the upset with an Uso Splash, a low blow on the kickout gave The Tribal Chief an edge he never gave up. Jimmy Uso was forced to come out and throw in the towel as Reigns kept beating down his brother.

This was an emotionally complex match that showed WWE still has fresh stories to tell. Jey came out of nowhere to become No. 1 contender, and he did not take that opportunity for granted. He shone throughout this process.

The match itself was the best story of the night and arguably the best story told all year in the ring. Reigns has always been a fantastic performer, but he feels complete as a heel. His entitled attitude works so well with his in-ring style.

While putting this match in the main event helped, it is obvious that Reigns is far and away WWE's top star. Face or heel, he is outshining everyone. He has elevated SmackDown almost single-handedly over the past month.

He took this title contest and turned it into the biggest angle in WWE, resulting in an unforgettable match that could only come about because he is so far above his peers.

Jey also emerged with serious credit for his performance in the match. The performer has always been known for his tag team work, but he made it count in the most important match of his singles career.

Drew McIntyre Deserved a More Definitive Victory

2 of 4

Drew McIntyre walked into Clash of Champions on a mission, and he accomplished just that. However, he won because everyone Randy Orton had wronged showed up. Big Show, Christian and Shawn Michaels got involved. Even Ric Flair arrived at the end.

This should have been a personal fight between these two men. If the legends were going to get involved, the WWE champion should have won far more easily.

The story made sense. The Viper had wronged and taunted so many. McIntyre was fighting for all those Orton had put on the shelf. It just never felt like The Scottish Psychopath was better on his own in this contest.

At Payback at the end of August, Keith Lee pinned The Viper in the center of the ring in dominant fashion. McIntyre should be seen as at least on par to The Limitless One. He should be able to win with three men helping him easily.

Still, in the end, the right man won. The Scottish Psychopath has gone six months as champion and does not look like he will be stopped anytime soon.

The SmackDown and Raw Tag Team Championships Should Be Unified

3 of 4

Cesaro and Shinsuke Nakamura dominated Lucha House Party, barely letting them get an advantage before putting away the No. 1 contenders with a combination of a giant swing and Kinshasa.

Angel Garza and Andrade tried to prove they could win without Zelina Vega, but The Street Profits defeated them again, albeit in controversial fashion as it seemed El Idolo kicked out.

The men's tag team divisions are running thin on talent. Andrade and Garza have rarely gotten an upper hand over The Street Profits, but they have fought multiple times for the Raw Tag Team Championship.

Lucha House Party were ignored until everyone else was occupied, and Lince Dorado, Gran Metalik and Kalisto have not looked like serious competitors over the past month. This match went a similar path to the previous bout these teams had ahead of Payback: fun but largely one-sided.

It would make sense to have the men's and women's tag team divisions both work with one pair of champions each. It would allow more variety in the tag team title picture. This does not mean both brands cannot have tag feuds. It just means only one set of champions would be defending gold.

If WWE put more effort into the tag team divisions, it would be easy to have champions for each brand. However, the lack of attention and care for the divisions demands fewer titles.

Card Changes Show WWE Must Take More Drastic Steps to Protect Talent

4 of 4

Shortly before Sunday's pay-per-view, WWE announced Nia Jax, Shayna Baszler and Nikki Cross would not wrestle at Clash of Champions after failing to receive the necessary medical clearance. This led to both Bayley vs. Cross and the WWE Women's Tag Team Championship match's cancellations.

It is important to be safe in this time. While no explanation has been provided for their absences, three wrestlers getting pulled from the show just before it begins in earnest indicates that the company is not doing enough to keep talent healthy.

Especially working in Florida, where cases of COVID-19 are still rising steadily, it is important to isolate talent ahead of such a big show. It should be generally important for everyone to remain isolated as much as possible, but it seems recently this has been less of a focus.

Wrestling in the middle of a pandemic is risky. However, WWE has showed that the company will not stop running.

The losses of Jax, Baszler and Cross changed this card considerably. Hopefully, all three recover quickly and can continue to compete.
