Fixing WWE Raw and SmackDown's Worst Booking Decisions for the Week of Feb. 22
WWE is in full-on prep mode for Super ShowDown on Thursday and Elimination Chamber on March 8, so almost every major segment this week was devoted to those shows.
Superstars have begun declaring their intentions to win their respective brands' Chamber matches, which is odd since WWE hasn't made a big effort to tell us what will be on the line, with the exception of the Raw women's title bout.
As far as Raw and SmackDown are concerned, WWE put on another solid week of programming. There were more peaks and valleys than previous week, but we still saw plenty of great wrestling.
The biggest problem management faced was advancing storylines in a meaningful way. Some feuds saw progress, but there were others that appeared to slow down.
Let's look at the things WWE could have fixed with a few simple changes.
Ricochet vs. Karl Anderson
1 of 4Ricochet is about to challenge Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship in the biggest match of his career at Super ShowDown.
Management has been having him win more matches lately to make him appear as if he has a chance against The Beast, but Monday's contest did nothing to help him.
Karl Anderson is a great wrestler, but he isn't exactly successful when it comes to singles matches. When was the last time you remember him winning a one-on-one contest?
If anything, WWE should have had Ricochet face Luke Gallows. At least beating him would have shown The One and Only doesn't have a problem fighting men who are nearly twice his size.
Scoring a victory over Anderson did nothing for either man and only served to highlight how The OC is not being used to its potential.
Mojo Rawley vs. R-Truth vs. Riddick Moss
2 of 4The 24/7 Championship began as one of the dumbest things WWE has introduced in a long time, but with a lot of hard work from R-Truth and Carmella, it became one of the best things going.
It was used purely for comedy, and Truth made it work perfectly. He has held the title 34 times and had segments with everyone from sports personalities on FS1 to celebrities like Marshmello.
Unfortunately, this kind of gimmick was never going to last forever. WWE put the title on Mojo Rawley at the end of January but failed to use it to build him up in a meaningful way. Now, Riddick Moss has the title, but the WWE Universe still knows nothing about him. He has given a quick backstage interview, but that is not enough to make the crowd care about him.
Unless WWE has a plan to push Moss, the title should have gone back to Truth during the Triple Threat match on Raw so he can at least make it entertaining again.
Rawley and Moss can have their own feud separate from the title. It would be more beneficial to both men if they could have matches without the gimmick of the 24/7 Championship distracting people.
Otis Misunderstands Another Moment
3 of 4Otis and Mandy Rose have had one of the most interesting storylines in WWE for the past several weeks, but Friday's show did nothing to move their angle forward.
Once again, Otis found himself feeling sad after seeing Rose leave the arena with Dolph Ziggler. They didn't leave on a date. The Showoff just offered to give her a ride in his car so she didn't have to wait for a service to pick her up.
Not only did this just rehash what happened at the restaurant the previous week, but it also made Otis look like a stalker by having him hide behind some crates while he observed Rose and Ziggler.
This was WWE's opportunity to capitalize on the emotion we all felt when we saw The Dozer get his heart broken on Valentine's Day, and it failed. Tucker could have fought Ziggler as a way of supporting his friend or WWE could have pulled the trigger and put Otis and The Showoff in the ring together.
If this storyline ends up being a series of misunderstandings for the next few weeks, it is going to lose steam fast. The payoff can come down the line. Right now, WWE has to focus on keeping the story entertaining.
Daniel Bryan vs. Heath Slater
4 of 4Do you remember when Heath Slater and Rhyno's tag team was one of the best parts of SmackDown? Those were good times.
The One-Man Band has moved back to being used as an enhancement talent, and while that is not an ideal position, he is good at making other people look better.
However, having him lose two matches to Daniel Bryan accomplished nothing. It does not appear as if Slater will get a push out of this, and WWE is clearly not doing it to have Bryan turn heel.
WWE almost had it right Friday, though. Drew Gulak had an interaction with Bryan and Slater backstage, and social media exploded with posts asking for the two technicians to be put in the ring together.
On the forthcoming SmackDown, we need to see the former cruiserweight champion and the former world champion do battle. If they are given at least 10 minutes, they will steal the show. It's that simple.
