5 Best Options for Goldberg at WWE Super ShowDown 2020 Ahead of SmackDown Return

Graham GSM MatthewsFeb 6, 2020

News of Goldberg's return to SmackDown on Friday sparked speculation among fans regarding what he will have in store for the WWE Universe. But with Super ShowDown coming up Feb. 27, it's safe to assume he will be announcing his intention to compete at the event.

The 53-year-old wrestled The Undertaker at the 2019 installment of the pay-per-view, and if Goldberg does confirm his appearance at this year's Super ShowDown, then it becomes a question of who he faces at the event. Up until Monday's Raw, there had been no sign he was going to wrestle again on the Road to WrestleMania 36, meaning his opponent could be anybody.

However, there are several Superstars on the SmackDown roster who could pose a threat to Goldberg on his in-ring return.

Although he has yet to avenge last year's loss to Undertaker, there's no reason to revisit the rivalry because of how poor their encounter was. Additionally, another round of Goldberg vs. Dolph Ziggler isn't all that appealing after the veteran squashed The Showoff at SummerSlam in August.

Everyone else on the blue brand should be considered for the spot, but these five stars would have the best chance of creating greatness with Goldberg in Saudi Arabia.

'The Fiend' Bray Wyatt

1 of 5

The most obvious option to face Goldberg at Super ShowDown is "The Fiend" Bray Wyatt, who is without a challenger to his Universal Championship.

All roads will likely lead to Roman Reigns competing for the title at WrestleMania 36, but Wyatt needs someone to defend against in the meantime and Goldberg may just be the right opponent.

It isn't a match many have clamored for, but a win over Goldberg for the titleholder would further legitimize his reign.

As for Goldberg, his history with the universal title is well-documented. He won it just months into his comeback three years ago and walked into WrestleMania 33 as the champion, but he never received his rightful rematch after losing to Brock Lesnar.

At this stage of his career, though, Goldberg should be facing fresh faces. It may not be anything special in the ring, but the sight of these two unstoppable forces waging war over SmackDown's top title would be intriguing.

Brock Lesnar vs. Ricochet doesn't feel like a worthy main event for Super ShowDown, whereas Wyatt vs. Goldberg could be the marquee match WWE is looking for.

If anyone has a shot at beating The Fiend, it's the man who pinned Lesnar in under 90 seconds.

Sheamus

2 of 5

Since resurfacing on SmackDown in January, Sheamus has been a force to be reckoned with. He knocked off Chad Gable in back-to-back bouts and likely has his sights set on facing talent higher up the totem pole en route to WrestleMania.

Challenging Braun Strowman for the Intercontinental Championship on April 5 would probably be his best bet, but he would be an excellent opponent for Goldberg before then. He's been seeking competition and would meet his match in the veteran if they went one-on-one.

Prior to this singles run, Sheamus spent more than three years in the tag team ranks alongside Cesaro as The Bar. Fans may forget he is a four-time world champion, and in order to get back to that level, he must first defeat a legend of Goldberg's caliber.

For the former WCW world heavyweight champion, he would have the chance to prove he can hang with a monster like Sheamus and take him to his limit. Squashing someone like Dolph Ziggler is one thing, but The Celtic Warrior is a different threat entirely.

As a battle of the bulls, Sheamus vs. Goldberg sounds like a ton of fun. Regardless of the result, it would be a physically taxing affair from which neither man would walk out in the same condition in which he arrived.

King Corbin

3 of 5

King Corbin's rivalry with Roman Reigns ran its course months ago, and it ended with the heel eating dog food on the most recent edition of SmackDown.

However, his two pinfall victories over The Big Dog and his many accolades—including winning the 2019 King of the Ring, the third Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal and the Money in the Bank ladder match in 2017—should not be forgotten. He's accomplished a significant amount over the course of his career in WWE, and he is one of the best heels in the company.

Corbin is one of those characters that likely wouldn't work at a main event level, but fans still love to see babyfaces give him his comeuppance. That was the case with Reigns during their lengthy feud, and Goldberg would be no different.

If the veteran is looking for an easy match at Super ShowDown and not have to go all-out, Corbin would be the perfect opponent. The heat he generates from fans alone would be enough of a reason for them to want to see Goldberg put him down with a Spear, followed by a Jackhammer.

There is no obvious WrestleMania 36 plan for the man who retired Kurt Angle at last year's Show of Shows. In the meantime, he can attempt to spoil Goldberg's grand comeback (to no avail, of course).

The more Corbin trash-talks Goldberg for what he did to Dolph Ziggler at SummerSlam heading into Super ShowDown, the more it will mean when the veteran shuts him up.

Matt Riddle

4 of 5

Needless to say, the chances of Goldberg getting his hands on Matt Riddle at Super ShowDown are slim to none, but it's worth mentioning given their checkered past.

Riddle has not held back from publicly criticizing the veteran in recent years, calling him "unsafe, dangerous and a liability to everyone else." He specifically took exception to Goldberg's performance against Undertaker at last year's Super ShowDown, blaming him for the bout's poor quality.

Goldberg retaliated by confronting Riddle backstage at SummerSlam in August, which WWE caught on camera and aired as part of its Day Of show on WWE Network. The interaction was awkward, to say the least, especially since the legitimate tension between the two couldn't have been more apparent.

It's unknown whether Goldberg would be willing to work a match with Riddle, let alone lose to him, but it would make for an interesting matchup. Sometimes the best feuds are the ones that have a sense of realism to them (see: Shawn Michaels vs. Bret Hart).

However, not only is Riddle still in NXT, but he'll also be competing for the NXT Tag Team Championship alongside Pete Dunne at TakeOver: Portland. In other words, there would be no time for Goldberg vs. Riddle to be properly built before Super ShowDown. But the possibility shouldn't be written off completely.

Roman Reigns

5 of 5

Roman Reigns vs. Goldberg has long been looked at as a dream match by fans, or at least the closest thing to one that could still happen. Between their similar backgrounds in football and the many world championships they have won in wrestling, it isn't hard to see why.

The only time they have ever encountered each other was on an episode of Raw in January 2017 during the buildup to that year's Royal Rumble. Despite their heated confrontation, Goldberg went on to resume his rivalry with Brock Lesnar, while The Big Dog set his sights on The Undertaker.

Of all the newer guys who would make sense to have a match with the veteran, Reigns is easily the most exciting prospect from the main roster. Considering both men use the Spear as one of their finishing maneuvers, the match almost has to happen at some point. When better than at Super ShowDown?

The Big Dog needs another major victory or two before he presumably contends for the Universal Championship at WrestleMania 36. Additionally, WWE desperately needs to move on from his feud with King Corbin, and it doesn't get much bigger—or better—for Reigns than colliding with a WWE Hall of Famer so close to The Show of Shows.

With all due respect to Randy Orton, Reigns has been the legend-killer in recent years, scoring wins over Undertaker, Triple H, John Cena and Lesnar. It might be time for him to add Goldberg's name to that illustrious list.
