NBA Rumors: Teams Given Deadline to Submit Precise Height, Age for All Players
All NBA teams have been notified they must submit certified height and age for every player before the end of the first week of their respective training camps, according to the New York Times' Marc Stein Thursday morning.
"For years some players have been listed as taller—and some shorter—than they really are," Stein added, noting that weight won't be measured and height will be without shoes. "The league clearly wants to change that."
Per Stein, the NBA was at least in part motivated to update their policy on age and height following Sacramento Kings guard Buddy Hield improperly being listed as 25 years old last season when he was 26.
"That's their fault, not my fault," Hield said in December, according to NBC Sports Bay Area's James Ham. "The first time I saw it on Wikipedia, my mom said, 'Why do they have your age wrong?' I said, 'I have no idea.' ... I came over with a passport. My passport has 1992 on it. My driver's license has 1992 on it. I just think people got their information from Wikipedia or wherever, and they just went with it. They just got it wrong."
Bleacher Report's Howard Beck offered additional commentary:
In 2016, Chris Herring wrote a story for the Wall Street Journal looking into why NBA players' heights were widely inaccurate. In it, Kevin Durant disagreed with the league's listing of him as 6'9".
"For me, when I'm talking to women, I'm 7-feet," Durant said (h/t SB Nation). "In basketball circles, I'm 6'9"."
NBA training camps open across the league on Oct. 1, with camps for teams participating in preseason outside of North America beginning from Sept. 28.
