Is The WWE Hurting Themselves With Family-Friendly Guest Hosts?

The Doctor Chris MuellerNov 6, 2009

For a few months now the WWE has had a guest host "run" Raw each week.  Some guest hosts have been great, and some have fallen flat.

Shaq was a very popular appearance, whereas Nancy O'Dell seemed to be less interesting to WWE fans, granted she is quite attractive.  The real question here: is it helping the WWE or hurting them?

Some fans have enjoyed this new format for the Monday Night Wrestling show while others have left altogether.  I tend to agree with some people that the guest host spots are taking too much time away from the wrestling people paid to see.

I've read different articles where they break down some of the shows and how time is allocated and its shocking to see that some episodes of Raw only have about 24 minutes of actual wrestling while the rest is skits, interviews and guest host stuff.  Well, maybe not shocking these days, but still sad.

The guest host idea was started to bring in viewers of all different kinds of media and entertainment as well as boost ratings with fans who may have left the WWE years ago.

So far it is debatable as to whether or not it has helped the WWE.  Last week was a big boost for Raw's ratings but that hasn't always been the case.

Watching WWE Raw has been interesting to say the least, but some things that have been happening are getting old and stale, for example, Santino is a great comic talent but recently the WWE has only been using him to interact with the guest host.

I'm sure this has been fun for some, to wonder what he will do this week, but I can't help feel that its becoming to predictable.

The main event scene has been just as predictable and boring has it has been for two years now, and this was supposed to give the feeling of unpredictability.

Vince is trying to re-brand the WWE by making it a more family friendly environment like it was in the 80's, but this has soured many fans who were either Attitude era fans or older.

By making a show that is essentially about fighting seem family friendly, you are sending a mixed message.  When Vince ordered the officials to clean up Cena's wound in the Iron man match with Orton, I knew I had seen the end of wrestling as I knew it.

When I think of great wrestling I think of Steve Austin, Bret Hart, HBK, Undertaker, and others who have literally bled buckets for the sake of entertainment, not that I wish anyone to actually get hurt but if the wound comes about naturally then let the wrestler decide if it needs to be patched up and not the producer.

In my opinion, the guest host idea was good for awhile, and it might still work if they just did one per month, but the gimmick is getting tired and needs to be put to sleep.

I think that while some people they have planned will be interesting, it is really only a matter of time before we see another full-time GM on Raw.

And as for the whole "Family Friendly" initiative in the WWE, I say if Linda loses the election then go back to TV-14, because tough guys who fight for a living should not be considered kids' role models anyways.

What do you think of the guest host gimmick?
