Mort: Colts Have 'Guarded Optimism' Andrew Luck Will Play Week 1 Amid Injuries

Rob GoldbergAug 15, 2019

Although Andrew Luck has been dealing with both calf and ankle injuries throughout the preseason, there is reportedly "guarded optimism" the Indianapolis Colts quarterback will play in Week 1, according to Chris Mortensen of ESPN.

Luck is currently planning to sit throughout the preseason and is already questionable for the team's first game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sept. 8, according to Zak Keefer of The Athletic.

"I feel pretty good about him being out there," former NFL star Peyton Manning said of Luck, per Keefer.

The calf injury has limited Luck since April, causing him to miss organized team activities as well as the start of training camp.

General manager Chris Ballard explained Tuesday that the quarterback developed an ankle issue while dealing with the calf problem, per Stephen Holder of The Athletic.

Add these issues to Luck's injury history—he missed 26 games in three seasons from 2015-17—and there is certainly reason to be concerned about the quarterback's health.

Although the team wants to be cautious with its star player, fans will likely want to see him on the field sooner than later. As a four-time Pro Bowler, he could definitely come in handy during a Week 1 matchup against a fellow AFC contender.

If Luck is unable to play, backup Jacoby Brissett will likely get the nod after starting 15 games for the Colts in 2017. He only played sparingly last season, but if needed, he could serve as an experienced option for the team this year.
