Fomula one: rumours on a much discussed split with the FIA

Alex LevyJun 9, 2008

In a recent article in the Formula one publications, Ferrari and Mclaren spoke out against rumours revolving around key meetings held with Bernie Ecclestone in which was raised the possibility of ditching the FIA-sanctioned championship to compete in a separate self-regulated series.

These rumours is just the continuation of a power-battle between Max Mosley and Bernie Ecclestone. Whilst it is understandable those involved on all levels in formula one from engineers, pilot to team managers would not want to be associated with a weak and at times inappropriate governing body which has to add insult to injury retained a shameful figure at its command. The possibility of competing in a new series may well just be a risky move of its own. Why? because if F1 was to become independent, then who would be at its command? I can only think of Bernie Ecclestone for the man has failed in bringing down Mosley as head of the FIA. Friendship has no place in business, nevermind the pair have known and worked with one another for over 40 years now; friends are only as good as long as they benefit you in someways until you get rid of them of course or attempt to...

This dynamic may also shed some light on how Max Mosley somehow retained his job with an astounding majority of votes in the face of boycotts and world wide protests from major automobiles bodies.

Those who voted for the motion mainly did so in the fear the early depart of Mosley would have created a power vaccuum in which Ecclestone would have most probably furthered his grip on the sport; it also explains how Bernie tried to scare the world of motorsports on the possibility of a renewed Mosley Mandate which was denied totally by Max himself.

Max Mosley was quoted saying he'd be confident on retaining his seat before the vote because of intricacies ( i.e. corporate allegiances may be) within the world of motorsport that just would not have allowed for him to leave without the guarantee of a successor.

Bottom line is politics and corporation are ruining the image of Formula one; whilst it is fair and square stakeholders have different interests, views and ambitions for the sport; they should rather think about the image of F1 and the fans above anything else that includes battling for power and the millions they'll be cashing in pension funds!!!
