Deontay Wilder Discusses 'Desperate' Anthony Joshua, 'Killing' Dominic Breazeale

Gianni VerschuerenMay 15, 2019

WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder has called out "desperate" Anthony Joshua, saying he holds all the cards in potential fight negotiations. He also reiterated his desire to kill a man in the ring ahead of Saturday's title defence against Dominic Breazeale.

TMZ asked Wilder about earlier comments from Joshua, in which the Brit said the Bronze Bomber should come to him to make a fight happen. Wilder was adamant he tried that multiple times already:

"We did that five times. And, they denied me! So, I don't want to hear him talking about 'coming to see me' because we came and saw you, ya'll still ran! Now you want me to come and see you? Nah. Now it's on our terms. We'll come and see you when we want to come and see you."

Per the Mirror's Martin Domin, he also looked ahead to Saturday's title bout against Breazeale, saying there's bad blood between the two and would have the "right" to kill his opponent:

"This is the only sport in the world where you can kill a man and get paid for it at the same time, so why not use my right to do so? Dominic Breazeale asked for this. I didn't ask for this, he asked for me. If it comes, it comes. This is a brutal sport.

"This is not a gentleman's sport, we don't ask to hit each other in the face, but we do anyway. You can ask any doctor around the world and he'll tell you the head is not meant to be hit. Anyone can go. And on this particular time, we've got real bad blood against each other.

"I can't wait. Like I said, he's like a fly in my ear. I can't wait to get him out. It's going to be in dramatic fashion, in a fashion nobody has ever seen. His life is on the line, and I do mean his life. I'm still trying to get me a body on my record."

Wilder previously discussed wanting "a body on his record" in an interview with The Breakfast Club with Charlamagne Tha God and Angela Yee, per TMZ Sports.

The 33-year-old has an unbeaten record of 40 wins with a single draw. The draw came in his last outing, the highly anticipated bout against Tyson Fury in Los Angeles in December.

Fury told Behind The Gloves (h/t TalkSport's Michael Benson) he believes the rematch will happen in December. That opened the door for Breazeale to face Wilder, who became his mandatory challenger for the WBC belt by knocking out Carlos Negro last year, per Sky Sports.

It will be Breazeale's second shot at a world title. In 2016, he suffered a TKO loss to Joshua in the latter's first defence of the IBF strap.

Here is the full video of that fight, via Joshua's official YouTube channel:

Joshua holds the WBA, WBO, IBF and IBO straps, but he hasn't booked a fight against a marquee name since beating Wladimir Klitschko in 2017. He has beaten Carlos Takam, Joseph Parker and Alexander Povetkin in that span and will take on Andy Ruiz Jr. at Madison Square Garden in New York on June 1.

He could be forced to wait for a shot at Wilder or Fury even longer if the two decide to have their rematch first. The Gypsy King's next fight will be against Tom Schwarz at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on June 15.
