The Miami Dolphins drafted former Clemson Tigers defensive tackle Christian Wilkins with the 13th overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft on Thursday.

Bleacher Report draft expert Matt Miller had the 6'3", 315-pound lineman as the No. 22 overall prospect in this year's class.

Wilkins is coming off an impressive four-year run at Clemson in which he earned three first-team All-American selections, two national championships and the 2018 William V. Campbell Trophy (given to the best football scholar-athlete). His 59 games played are tied for the most in program history.

He piled up 192 tackles, 40.5 tackles for losses and 16 sacks over the course of his collegiate career. As a senior, he helped the Tigers become the first team in more than a century to go 15-0 by recording career highs in tackles for loss (14) and sacks (5.5) while notching 51 total tackles.

As Pro Football Focus College noted, nobody in the ACC was better at pressuring the quarterback than the Clemson star:

That performance earned him unanimous All-American honors and also made him a finalist for the Nagurski Trophy (best defensive player), the Bednarik Award (best defensive player) and the Outland Trophy (best interior lineman).

"This is a big, powerful kid who holds up really well on the edge, and he hasn't really tapped his potential," an AFC scout told Chase Goodbread of NFL.com. "If you try to double-team him with a tight end and a tackle, he'll kick that double-team's ass. He'll split that. You double team him with a tackle and a guard, you can contain him, but he'll get a stalemate."

And as much of a force as he can be on defense, Wilkins also proved valuable on offense. He had four career rushing attempts for 13 yards and two touchdowns, adding both a 31-yard catch and a touchdown reception for the passing attack.

In other words, the Dolphins are getting a versatile player who can make an impact on both sides of the football.

Wilkins' playmaking abilities and leadership skills should be a welcome addition to Miami's front seven. He proved to be a dominant force in the middle of the line in college, and now he will have a chance to show what he can do in the pros.

The addition of Wilkins should help a pass rush that was 29th in sacks in 2018.

The Dolphins had no player with more than 6.5 sacks, and Robert Quinn and Cameron Wake—their two leading pass-rushers—are no longer on the roster.

The Dolphins drafted someone who can be a force up front and also the centerpiece of the defensive line for years to come.
