South Florida's SOS: Save Our Season!
The University of South Florida's football season is not dead yet, but it is on life support.
Its fans are sending out massive SOS messages: Save Our Season!
Coach Jim Leavitt needs to get the message in a hurry.
This 2009 South Florida team is slipping away in the same manner it did in 2007 then again in 2008. It's "Deja Bull" all over again.
USF has suffered consecutive beat-downs at the hands of the Big East favorites—Cincinnati and Pittsburgh in that order.
The loss to Pitt was brutal. USF did nothing right in that 41-14 loss that could have been a lot worse had Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt not called off the dogs after three quarters.
There is nothing about USF's team right now that remotely resembles the team that went to Tallahassee and beat Florida State, 17-7.
Nothing.
B.J. Daniels, the red-shirt freshman quarterback who looked so good against the Seminoles, looked miserable in Pittsburgh and not real good at home in the Cincinnati loss.
Now West Virginia comes to town for a Friday night national telecast from Raymond James Stadium.
Care to bet that Mountaineer running back Noel Devine can't wait to run all over that fancy turf?
Devine came up huge for the Mountaineers last week when he ripped off a 56-yard run in the final minutes of the game to spur his team to a 28-24 victory over an inspired Connecticut team that was mourning the loss of slain cornerback Jazz Howard.
Devine is a nightmare for any defensive coordinator and USF's Joe Tresey has had his share of troubles the past two weeks. USF has given up big plays. The secondary has been sporadic and defensive line star George Selvie has been a non-factor.
With two losses in Big East play, USF is probably out of the running and gone for sure if West Virginia prevails.
A lot on the line for the Bulls?
A lot and then some.
They're not dead yet, but they're lying on the ground without a lot of life in them.
