Hey Dan Snyder – Is it the playcalling or a perfect storm?

Mark ButerbaughOct 27, 2009

Last night was the first night of brand spanking new play calling.  Fresh from retirement, Sherman Lewis ' play calling promise to invade FEDEX Field much like General Sherman did in Savannah, right? Made a helluva difference eh?

Zorn . . . The fact is, HC Jim Zorn is in over his head.  We know that.  There are relatively few fans out there that would actually defend Jim Zorn and say he was not part of any of the problem.  Those fans are either blind, don't understand football,  or are simply horny for Zorny.  He is in over his head.  BUT,  he is not THE problem, but rather a symptom of the overall problem.

Lewis . . . Sherman Lewis called the same plays out of the same playbook, just a different mix.  The result --- same lack of execution. Lewis reportedly brought no new plays to the system.  How could he?  He doesn't even have familiarity with the offensive personnel yet.   That takes time.

So all Lewis did was decide which of the existing plays to call and when.  Same thing Zorn would have done.   It doesn't matter though.  There is a fundamental lack of execution of what ever play is called.  That goes to talent, not play calling.

Snyder's fallacy . . . This is Dan Snyder's fallacy.  It is NOT the play calling.  It is lack of execution by over priced and over hyped talent.  Period.   The problem with the Redskins franchise is and has been a Dan Snyder run front office.  Snyderrato BUILT this roster, not Jim Zorn.  Snyderrato drafted this roster, NOT Jim Zorn.  In fact, most of the existing offensive roster, such as, Campbell, Portis, Moss,  Randle El, Cooley, Rabach, Samuels, Heyer, Thomas, and others pre-date Jim Zorn.  This is not a Zorn picked team, he inherited this offensive mess.

Offensive Line . . . I am convinced there is not a single professional GM out there that would have felt even minimally confident going into this season with an aging offensive line backed up by such poor depth.   Not only did the Washington Redskins enter the 2009 season with one of the older offensive lines in the NFL, but the lack of quality depth behind these aging veterans was staggering. Chris Samuels and Randy Thomas were a bit hobbled before the season even began.  Yet, they chose to go into the season with D'Anthony Batiste backing up Samuels at the all important left OT spot?  No one, and I mean NO ONE, was fooled to think Thomas was going to make it through the season.  Yet, the Redskins go into the season with Chad Rinehart as primary backup, a 2008 third round pick.  They had so much confidence in Rinehart that he never once made the active roster in 2008, nor did he make the active roster until the Thomas injury this year.  A THIRD ROUND pick.

Finally, the Redskins chose to go into the season with Stephon Heyer as the starting RT.  Really?  Is that how much Snyderrato undervalues offensive lineman?    His primary backup is Mike Williams, a guy who has not played in the NFL since, ummmm, 2005. Now the Redskins have foreseeable injuries and that poor quality depth becomes your offensive line starters.   In essence, the perfect storm has occurred and the poorly constructed offense is as inept as it ever has been.  The change in the guy that chooses and calls the play is irrelevant.
