Tito Ortiz vs. Chuck Liddell 3 Announced for Nov. 24 Under Golden Boy Promotions
Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz are set to square off for the third time onย Nov. 24 at The Forum in Inglewood, California, according to ESPN's Brett Okamoto.ย
The fight will also be the MMA debut forย Golden Boy Promotions.
"I'm excited for our first Golden Boy MMA event," Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya said, via Okamoto. "It reminds me of the first-ever fight I did in boxing [in 2002]. I'm going to see how this one goes, but just the way I did in boxing, I plan on becoming a regular promoter of MMA. There's no reason I should only promote one sport."
This trilogy showdown will mark the first time Ortiz and Liddell have fought since UFC 66 in Dec. 2006, a three-round victory for the Iceman. Liddell also defeated Ortiz in two rounds at UFC 47 in April 2004.
Now, Ortiz has to be hoping the third time is the charm.
Liddell, now 48, is 21-8 in his career but has not fought since June 2010. Before retiring, he had lost his previous three matches. In fact, he was just 1-5 since beating Ortiz for the second time. His lone victory during that span came againstย Wanderlei Silva at UFC 79 in Dec. 2007.
Ortiz, 43, is 19-12-1 in his career, with his last fight coming in the form of a victory overย Chael Sonnen at Bellator 170 in January 2017. He has won three of his last four bouts after going through a 1-7-1 stretch.
While both fighters had previously retired, this fight has been in the works for months. Ortiz announced onย Instagramย in May that he was ready for a third fight, andย Okamotoย reported in July that there was an agreement for a fight.
Ortiz recently declined to get into specifics withย MMAjunkie, but De La Hoya revealed to ESPN that it will be a nice payday for both fighters:
"I can't get into the specifics of these deals, but I'll tell you that [Liddell and Ortiz] will be making a hell of a lot more money than they have with anybody else. They'll participate in revenue from PPV, gate and everything else that comes in. This will be the most lucrative fight of their careers.
"I think this fight will be very lucrative for both guys. This is an opportunity for them to show the world they still have what it takes to fight in the Octagon. I strongly feel it's never too late with two guys like this. Two names of this caliber, you can't go wrong."
Now, Liddell and Ortiz will have more than two months to train for the fight.
