Dirk's Big Agenda, A Little Like Peewee's Big Adventure
This opinion is a critique of Dirk Chatelain's latest article in the World Herald and to let you know about one fan's opinion of many who claim to have graduated with a degree in journalism. It just gets real old reading articles like the one printed in Sunday's World Herald when it's easy to see a personal agenda reflected in the writer's so called opinion. Some of these so called journalist love to take cheap shots. If this rebuttal seems like a cheap shot, so be it.
Dirk Chatelain obviously feels he has an axe to grind since coach Watson didn't treat him like a princess after he refused to accept the coaches answer to his oh so clever question last week. He then proceeded to tell Coach Watson his answer was unacceptable and therefore incorrect. This is the reason why coaches in general have no respect for so called sports journalists like Dirk Chatelain. In order to get respect you have to give respect. His latest article was a cute little hatchet job and is just another illustration of his pettiness and lack of professionalism.
Is Iowa State a great football team? No. Are they good football team? I would say yes. Take a look at their body of work and it is easy to see they were due for the winds of fate to finally blow their way. It's just too bad this had to come in the form of an 8 turnover day by our beloved Huskers. If one takes a look at college football results today and then you go back and read the expert commentary of the likes of Mr. Chatelain I think one would come to the conclusion that these guys really don't have a clue. Geniuses like Dirk evidently don't realize that college football is played by young men who are all doing their best to win each and every game and when things don't work out as planned they feel obligated to then pile on with their little man agendas. What Dirk said in this recent hatchet job in the World Herald is basically NA, NA, and NA...these coaches suck. Wow, I'm surprised the Pulitzer people aren't calling the Herald right now. Honestly, it was a surprise to hear him tell Coach Watson last week that he played a sport at any level. I'm going to go out on a limb and bet he was a (insert heavy sarcasm here) 'great teammate'. He was probably one of those guys who sat the bench and hid over in the corner with his other loser buddies talking about what idiots the coaches were for not playing a potential All American like himself.
Okay let's take a look at one of Dirk's more artful pieces of prose found in one of his latest masterpieces. "I feel for Watson, especially after a day like Saturday, when NU was as sloppy as a toddler with a Popsicle — eight turnovers in 13 possessions?" This quote is genius, pure genius. I know I know he had a deadline and this was the BEST he could do. What were you trying to imply Dirk? Were you saying these coaches are inept and surely they aren't talking about or making the players do any drills involving ball security? Bottom line as the old saying goes, s__t happens. Hey Dirk, how does it feel to be criticized by someone who only wrote some articles for the high school yearbook? As a true Husker fan I will continue to support coach Pelini, Watson, and the rest of the staff and players as they pursue the unattainable in sports…..perfection.
In summary here is some advice for the likes of Dirk Chatelain, try giving all coaches the respect they deserve and maybe they won't view you as simply an egotistical pain in the arse. This commentary was written as one fan's brutally honest view of the journalistic approach taken by Dirk Chatelain and some others cut from the same clothe. Oh and by the way, in no way was this an attempt at earning any one's respect, least of all Dirk Chatelain's.
With little or no respect yours truly a Husker fan.
