TCU Dominates BYU on the Road Confirming That They Belong With The Big Boys
I really wish I could have found a picture of Max Hall throwing a pick or something, but instead I stumbled upon this picture which seemed even more appropriate considering the mess that I just watched, and at least the girls are hot.
There is really only one word to sum up the BYU-TCU game:
Ugly.
The very first drive of the game gave me some hope because the defense looked fired up and forced TCU to punt which was exactly the start we needed. For whatever reason the defense thought you only had to win one series to win the game.
Note to BYU: You have to play a full sixty minutes to beat a quality opponent like TCU, even if you are at home.
I am actually glad that more of the country didn't get to see the beat down that ensued. It was just ridiculous. I was in Ft. Worth last year for that beating, and this game left me in awe.
I must pause to give all the credit in the world to TCU. They did exactly what Bronco said needed to be done to win this game; they executed. It would be nice if Bronco could convince his team to do that more than just against Oklahoma. TCU was faster in everything, they were in the right spots, and they were just downright better.
So where did BYU go wrong? It is really hard for me to say because it wasn't anything overly apparent. Max Hall's pick wasn't really his fault. Sure the ball was a little behind, but it should have been caught, and there is nothing he can do about it being tipped so high.
Harvey Unga was once again the man and racked up all kinds of yards. If the rest of the team could put out half as much effort as him then it would have been a lot closer. I have been around teams in sports where only one or two players seem to REALLY put out and do their best, and I feel so bad that all of their effort goes to waste.
The defense just looked lost, again. I really like Jaime Hill, and was totally impressed after the Oklahoma, but I don't know what to think anymore. I realize he has an undersized and slow defense, but they have shown they can compete with some of the best, for whatever reason they refuse to play a complete game now.
Offensively, we just looked lost too. I would put a lot of the blame on Robert Anae. His play calling just makes no sense. It is like playing your buddy on Playstation or something, because you can guess almost every single play he will run before they line up.
He would run on first and second, and then throw on third. I couldn't tell you the exact numbers, but it seemed like 90 percent of the passes went to the sidelines. Running a draw on third and eight when you still have a chance, and a quarterback draw when there is still ten yards to go... are you serious?
I really used to like Anae... oh wait, no I don't, his play calling has never made sense. Anybody remember a certain Las Vegas Bowl (I know it is hard with how many there have been) when he decided to run the ball when we were pinned near the goal line instead of just kneeling it before halftime?
Plain and simple, it is time for BYU to go a different direction with the offense.
Pitta was the leading receiver, but he only had four catches. Maybe someone at BYU should read cnnsi.com and realize that he got selected as the midseason All-American at tight-end, and that it might be worth trying to get him the ball a little more.
Max just looked totally lost in the pocket. Granted, he was getting a lot of pressure because his line could block anyone tonight, but even when they did give him time he was stumbling all over the place. Max is a good quarterback, and he has played some great games over the years, but let's be real he is not an elite quarterback.
I also need to give my two cents on the turf which is just a mess. I saw at least two or three plays where BYU didn't make a play as a direct result of the turf giving way. I'm not saying that is why we lost the game, just that someone needs to fix that. The old turf was just fine, and if it ain't broke don't fix it, right?
This game should show the rest of the country just how good TCU is, and they keep getting better every week. If this doesn't show the voters that TCU deserves to jump Boise State. I'm not sure what will, except a beat down of Utah, which will come later.
I never like losing, but at least this one should aid TCU in making it to the BCS. It may also play out that Boise State and TCU both run the table, and how on earth could the BCS get away with not putting two top ten, maybe top five, teams in BCS games.
Lastly, I would just like to thank the TCU cheerleaders pictured above for putting a smile on my face to finish out the day.
