Mike McCarthy Has No Concerns About Clay Matthews' Nose Injury, Future

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said the team is not concerned about Clay Matthews' long-term health after he suffered a broken nose in a charity softball game over the weekend.

"They're talking about scheduling surgery probably midweek," McCarthy told reporters before Monday's OTAs. "It's unfortunate. It's for a great cause. We're just glad he's OK."

Matthews was pitching when Packers offensive lineman Lucas Patrick smacked a line drive and hit him in the face during Saturday's Green & Gold Charity Softball Game. He tweeted out that he would need surgery once the swelling subsides in his nose:

"I think it's great on a number of fronts," McCarthy said. "Anytime your players give back, charity, involved in the community … It's great for the fans. They sell it out every year. It's on its fourth player identity for the softball game. I'm not going to overreact to this."

The Packers are set to begin mandatory minicamp next week. It's unlikely Matthews will be available for those activities, but no timetable has been set for his return. The Packers will likely update his status once the surgery is completed.

Matthews, 32, recorded 43 tackles and 7.5 sacks in 2017. He has missed six games over the last two seasons and has played in 16 games just three times in his nine-year career.
