IPL 2018: Highest Run-Scorers, Top Bowling Averages and More T20 Stats

Tom SunderlandMay 18, 2018

Chennai Super Kings remain two points off the top of the 2018 Indian Premier League after they lost to Delhi Daredevils by 34 runs on Friday in their penultimate outing of the regular season.

Delhi executed their tactics to perfection and ultimately pacified Chennai in their attempts to chase down a 162 total, ultimately falling way short as they suffered their third defeat in five matches.

Sunrisers Hyderabad can now guarantee a first-place IPL finish on Saturday if they beat Kolkata Knight Riders at their Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium.

Feroz Shah Kotla has proved itself to be a tricky venue for IPL visitors in recent times, and Delhi illustrated why with another robust performance on Friday, this time against those who would challenge for the table summit.

A good-not-great opening innings from the hosts saw Rishabh Pant and Vijay Shankar contribute 38 and 36, respectively, but it wasn't until man-of-the-match Harshal Patel entered late in the order that the ship was steadied, per Cricbuzz:

That efficient 36—including four sixes, one shy of the total his team-mates managed combined—ultimately proved to be the result-defining score, indicating Patel is more of an all-rounder than many thought.

Delhi captain Shreyas Iyer hit 19 from 22 and did a supreme job marshalling his troops throughout the clash He spoke to ESPNcricinfo after the result and said:

"We were craving for this victory. Really satisfying victory. Lived up to the expectations. Wasn't easy to bat on this wicket, Harshal delivered, that last over was very important to get us to 163 (162). We were never lacking preparations, we were just not able to execute. All three clicked together in the games that we've won."

The result won't change the fact the Daredevils are set to finish the season at the bottom of the standings, but Trent Boult, who took a joint-high two wickets from the Super Kings, spoke of the positives from this result:

Boult's two wickets were also enough to put him back in the top five of the race for this season's Purple Cap, bringing his tally for the term up to 17, albeit still seven shy of leader Andrew Tye.

Chennai's Ambati Rayudu also continued his best IPL season thus far, and while his half-century couldn't rake in victory for his side, he did manage a major career milestone on the individual front, per Broken Cricket:

Rayudu has 585 runs for the campaign but is still 67 behind Lokesh Rahul, with Kings XI Punjab potentially on their way to winning both Orange and Purple Caps.

The Super Kings have a fleeting chance of finishing top of the IPL standings before the play-offs get underway on Tuesday, and they'll need Hyderabad to suffer a third defeat in succession on Saturday in order to keep it alive.
