Jordan Spieth Shoots Disappointing 2-Over in Final Round at Players Championship
Jordan Spieth completed an up-and-down week at The 2018 Players Championship, finishing six strokes under par for the tournament in a tie for 41st when he entered the clubhouse Sunday.
He shot a 74 in his final round at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, a round that looks much worse with a quadruple bogey on No. 18. The three-time major winner otherwise recorded three birdies and a bogey in a strange round.
While Spieth started the tournament with a 75 in Round 1 and came within one stroke of missing the cut for the fourth straight year, he did at least finish nine under par for the final three days.
His final round was almost salvaged on the famous 17th hole, when he carded a birdie after a near hole-in-one:
Unfortunately, he followed it up with a tee shot into the water on the par-four 18th before unraveling with two missed short putts. He recorded an eight on the final hole of the tournament with some serious ramifications:
A lot of excitement surrounded the first Sunday pairing of Spieth and Tiger Woods, per Zach Pereles of Yahoo Sports.
This created massive crowds despite the fact that neither had a real chance to catch Webb Simpson for the lead.
It seemed like the two superstars would at least create an exciting one-on-one battle early in the day, hitting equally impressive approach shots on No. 4:
The difference was Woods making his birdie putt while Spieth settled for par. Woods had six birdies to get to 11 under for the tournament while Spieth struggled to keep up.
The 24-year-old had 13 pars on the day, including in each of his first seven holes, while nearly everyone around him was posting low numbers.
Spieth saw plenty of birdie chances given his 72.2 percent greens in regulation. Unfortunately, he couldn't get it going on the green, finishing minus-3.216 in strokes gained while putting.
He entered the week ranked 187th out of 212 golfers in this category, per PGATour.com, so it's clear his putting will need to improve.
Spieth finished second on tour in putting two years ago.
The young player won't have much time to get over the disappointing finish as this is the first of four tournaments in four straight weekends. The run continues for Spieth with a pair of Texas events, including the AT&T Byron Nelson at Trinity Forest Golf Club in his hometown of Dallas.
Considering he hasn't had much success in this event, missing the cut last year and never finishing in the top 15 in seven appearances (including as an amateur), he will hope for a much better showing this time around.
