Sunday Results

No. 1 Maryland 14, Robert Morris 11

Maryland is on to the quarterfinals after beating Robert Morris 14-11 in what was a difficult challenge early for the Terps.

Robert Morris got off to a great start, leading 3-1 after the first quarter and heading into the second half with a 6-3 advantage. Joe Catapano of SB Nation's Testudo Times noted how Maryland was somewhat lucky to only be down three goals:

Then, the Terrapins exploded for three goals inside the first three minutes of the third quarter to tie the game. Connor Kelly leveled things up with 12 minutes, 20 seconds remaining in the quarter, with NCAA Lacrosse sharing a replay of the goal:

Maryland outscored Robert Morris 6-1 over the entire quarter to take a 9-7 lead and shift momentum in their favor. Carter Yepsen cut the deficit to one goal 55 seconds into the fourth quarter, but the Colonials were unable to silence the Terrapins' high-powered attack.

Maryland goalie Dan Morris finished with nearly twice as many saves (13) as his counterpart Chris Reynolds (seven), which speaks both to Morris' performance and his team's efficiency at the other end.

The Terps were below their best Sunday, but they responded brilliantly in the second half as their season was hanging in the balance.

Denver 9, No. 7 Notre Dame 7

Austin French scored what proved to be the decisive goal, as the Denver Pioneers upset the seventh-seeded Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 9-7.

The two teams entered the final quarter tied at six. Bryan Costabile put Notre Dame ahead 7-6 at the 11:38 mark of the fourth quarter before Ethan Walker responded with a goal for the Pioneers 15 seconds later.

Then came French's tally with a little over 10 minutes left in the game:

Colton Jackson tacked on an insurance goal with 4:04 remaining. Costabile forced Alex Ready to make a save inside the final minute, but the Fighting Irish were unable to make up a two-goal deficit in such a short amount of time.

While the Pioneers' victory was an upset in terms of the tournament seedings, Denver is no stranger to the NCAA tournament. The team is headed to the quarterfinals for the second year in a row and reached the semifinals in 2017, two years after winning a national title.

The second-seeded Albany Great Danes will have their hands full next Saturday.

No. 5 Johns Hopkins 10, Georgetown 9

With 29 seconds left in overtime, Shack Stanwick scored to send the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays into the quarterfinals with a 10-9 win over the Georgetown Hoyas. Stanwick's goal arrived after Johns Hopkins overcame a four-goal deficit entering the fourth quarter to force overtime.

Kyle Marr scored two goals to make it an 8-6 game before Robert Clark gave Georgetown a three-goal lead with 12:34 remaining.

Marr was a one-man wrecking crew, though, as he beat Hoyas goalie Nick Marrocco three more times, the last of his goals coming 4:03 from the end of regulation. SB Nation's College Crosse had an accurate illustration for Marr's final quarter:

The junior attacker was responsible for all five of the Blue Jays' goals in the final frame.

The good news for Georgetown was that Marr cooled off in overtime. The bad news was that the Hoyas couldn't prevent Stanwick from getting inside position on Stephen MacLeod. MacLeod fouled Stanwick to try to prevent a goal-scoring opportunity, but Stanwick beat Marrocco anyway:

This is John Hopkins' first quarterfinal appearance since 2015, which qualifies as a drought to some extent for a school that reached the final eight on 14 occasions between 2000 and 2015.

Cornell 10, No. 8 Syracuse 9

While not quite matching the dramatics of Johns Hopkins' comeback against Georgetown, the Cornell Big Red fought back from a three-goal deficit to beat the Syracuse Orange 10-9.

Notching the second of his two goals on the night, Jamie Trimboli put Syracuse ahead 6-3 with 10:27 left in the first half, and the Orange owned a 7-5 advantage heading into halftime.

Clarke Petterson was the game's high scorer, finishing with five goals, and stepped up big in the second half. He tied the game at eight with three seconds left in the third quarter and then gave Cornell a 9-8 lead 3:13 into the fourth quarter.

Although Brendan Bomberry tied the game for Syracuse, the Orange were unable to get another goal to move on to the quarterfinals. Instead, Colton Rupp delivered the decisive blow for Big Red, scoring with 5:35 remaining.

As a result, Cornell is among the last eight teams standing for the first time since 2013.
