Preakness 2018: Post Time, TV Schedule and Live-Stream Hub for 143rd Race
The second leg of the 2018 Triple Crown of horse racing will take place on Saturday, May 19, with the 143rd running of the Preakness Stakes at the Pimlico Race Track in Baltimore.
NBC will carry full coverage of the event, with live-stream options available via NBCSN and NBC Live. For UK viewers, At The Races will have you covered. According to Kenan Goyette of Sporting News, post time is currently scheduled for 6:20 p.m. ET (11:20 p.m. BST).
All eyes will be on Kentucky Derby winner Justify, who has been cleared to run. Coming out of the Derby, there were some question marks regarding his health, per Darin Zoccali of TVG:
Justify entered the Run for the Roses as the clear favourite to win the race and a strong contender for the Triple Crown. Unbeaten in three races prior, he cruised to another triumph, becoming the first horse to win the Derby after not racing as a two-year-old since 1882.
Here's a look at the Derby replay:
Justify was near the lead of the pack the entire way and surged to the front in the final turn before holding his speed well down the stretch. Good Magic and Audible both impressed in the stretch to finish in second and third, respectively, but never threatened the leader.
His speed over 1 1⁄4 miles bodes well for his chances at Pimlico, a slightly shorter track. The Preakness is run over a distance of 1 3⁄16 miles and has been a great race for dominant favourites for the Triple Crown in recent years.
Since 2012, three horses have followed up a win in the Derby with a win at Pimlico: I'll Have Another, California Chrome and American Pharoah. The later would go on to win the Belmont Stakes in New York as well, becoming the first Triple Crown winner since 1978.
Justify is also seen as a contender for the top honour in horse racing, but per TGV's Joaquin Jaime, he's already working on a heavy schedule, and that's not even counting the injury:
He's likely to face a tough challenge from a well-rested Quip. Runner-up to Magnum Moon in the Arkansas Derby, he's been building with an eye on the Preakness, rather than the Derby, and that could mean trouble for Justify:
If his heel checks out, Justify should enter the Preakness as the favourite, and for good reason. But with an eye on making history at Belmont, punters will keep a close eye on his form and fitness ahead of the toughest challenge of them all.
