Kentucky Derby Results 2018: Finishing Order, Replay Video and Payouts

Joseph ZuckerMay 5, 2018

Justify conquered the first leg of the Triple Crown with a win at the 2018 Kentucky Derby on Saturday at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.

Justify entered the gate as the odds-on favorite (13-4), according to OddsShark. The three-year-old lived up to the hype with what proved to be a relatively comfortable victory. Good Magic and Audible made late pushes down the final stretch, but neither could displace Justify and placed second and third, respectively.

Here's a look at the payouts for the top three finishers and the full race standings.

Promises Fulfilled, who started from the third gate, got off to a strong start and was running neck and neck with Justify. A heavy underdog coming into the race, Promises Fulfilled began slipping the longer the Derby went on and wound up in 15th place.

Justify moved into first coming around the third turn, at which point the Derby was largely a two-horse race between Justify and Good Magic. Jockey Mike Smith did well, though, to deny Jose Ortiz and Good Magic any opportunity to steal a late win.

"He's just something else," Smith said in his post-race interview on the track, per Sky Sports' At The Races. "I don't have the vocabulary to describe how good Justify is."

Justify continued what has become a trend at Churchill Downs. According to OddsShark, the betting favorite has now won six straight Kentucky Derby races.

Many were impressed with Justify's performance despite what were muddy track conditions at Churchill Downs:

The focus now shifts to the 2018 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore on May 19. In recent years, the Preakness hasn't been a kind even to the Kentucky Derby winner.

American Pharoah went on to win the Triple Crown in 2015, but before that, only six horses since 2000 captured the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. 2017 Derby winner Always Dreaming placed eighth out of 10 horses at Pimlico.

A two-week turnaround time puts a serious strain on a horse's stamina. Even against what may be a somewhat weak field in the Preakness, the unbeaten Justify faces a tall task in Baltimore.
