NASCAR at Dover 2018 Qualifying Results: Kyle Larson Takes Pole Position
Kyle Larson won the pole for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series AAA 400 Drive for Autism at Dover International Speedway on Saturday, posting a top speed of 158.103 mph in qualifying on Friday.
"We've always qualified good here, have yet to get a pole," Larson said after his run, per NASCAR.com. "Have raced well here and have yet to get a win, so maybe we'll get both out of the way this weekend."
He further broke down his performance afterward with NASCAR on Twitter:
Larson has done just about everything but win in Dover. He had second- and fifth-place finishes at the track last season and has six top-10 finishes in his career there.
As for the rest of the field, Kevin Harvick (157.494 mph), Martin Truex Jr. (157.432 mph), Kyle Busch (157.226) and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (157.006) completed the top five.
NASCAR writer Jeff Gluck wasn't surprised to see those names atop the leaderboard:
Other notable finishes included last week's winner at Talladega Joey Logano, in 18th, and last year's winner of the event, Jimmie Johnson, finishing 19th. Kasey Kahne, meanwhile, tied with Ryan Newman in the first round of qualifying but Newman's advantage in points allowed him to move on to the second round. He ultimately finished 21st, while Kahne qualified at 25th.
"It's his lucky day," Kahne said, per Jim Utter of Motorsport.com. "It's for 24th, we're still not talking about a very good position. It was really tight. We have some work to do. I look forward to practice tomorrow and trying to get better for the race."
