IPL Results 2018: Kings XI vs. Mumbai Score, Updated T20 Points Table, Schedule

Matt JonesMay 4, 2018

A brilliant 21-ball 56-run partnership between Krunal Pandya and Rohit Sharma saw Mumbai Indians jump off the bottom of the Indian Premier League table on Friday, as they beat Kings XI Punjab by six wickets.

After deciding to bat, Chris Gayle's 50 and a late flurry from Marcus Stoinis propelled Kings XI to a total of 174 for six. In response, Mumbai struggled for impetus until late on, when Sharma (24) and Pandya (31) worked together to tremendous effect and sealed an unlikely victory with an over to spare.

The defeat for Mumbai sees them up from eighth into fifth, just one place behind Kings XI who stay in fourth.

Mumbai Indians (176 for four) beat Kings XI Punjab (174 for six) by six wickets with six balls remaining

After winning the toss, Kings XI unsurprisingly opted to bat and unleash the heavy hitters they had at the top of the order.

But as it transpired, neither Lokesh Rahul or Gayle was able to play at his devastating best, with the former falling for 24 from 20 balls.

His opening partner played with uncharacteristic patience, by his standards anyway. Gayle made 50 from 40 balls, striking six fours and two sixes. He departed to leave Punjab 88 for two; as noted by Bharath Seervi of ESPN Cricinfo, the openers have tended to get Kings XI off to a strong start:

It was left to the middle order to pile the runs on late in the innings. Karun Nair made a brisk 23 before Marcus Stoinis hammered an unbeaten 29 from 15 balls that was key to Kings XI making 174 for six.

As noted by journalist Ayaz Memon, after a strong start from the Mumbai bowlers, Stoinis had handed Punjab the momentum:

The response was intriguing from the Indians, as both Suryakumar Yadav and Evin Lewis struggled to get into any sort of early rhythm.

Lewis fell for a stuttering 10, while Yadav continued to accumulate runs. Still, with the Kings XI bowlers keeping things tight, the run rate required for victory did begin to creep up. And when Yadav fell for 57, Mumbai were second favourites.

Ishan Kishan (25) and Hardik Pandya (23) threatened to change that when they came out to bat, although they both failed to build on good starts. With two-a-ball needed going into the final three overs, Mumbai's chances were fading.

It was up to Sharma to rescue the Indians here and as noted by the team's Twitter account, he passed a landmark while at the crease:

He was in the groove from the off and suddenly, with Pandya joining him in the middle, the boundaries started to flow. In the 18th over, the pair piled on an incredible 20 runs to swing the pendulum back in favour of Mumbai.

And while they could've played safe until the end of the innings at this point, Sharma and Pandya continued to put their foot down in the 19th over. Another 17 runs were leaked by Kings XI allowing Mumbai to seal a quite incredible victory with six balls to spare.
