Gary Neville: Mauricio Pochettino Should Be Next Manchester United Manager

James DudkoApr 30, 2018

Gary Neville believes Mauricio Pochettino should be Manchester United's next manager because the Argentinian is "extracting the maximum from very limited resources" at Tottenham Hotspur.

Neville, who was speaking on Monday Night Football on Sky Sports (h/t Lewis Winter of the Daily Express), believes Pochettino should replace Jose Mourinho but only after the Portuguese "wins multiple Premier League titles."

Neville's confidence in Pochettino is somewhat curious since the Spurs chief hasn't won a trophy in England.

Tottenham's latest attempt to win a first trophy since securing the League Cup in 2008 was brought to an end by Mourinho's United, who beat Spurs 2-1 at Wembley Stadium in the FA Cup semi-final on April 21.

Even so, Jonathan Wilson of the Guardian thinks "there is something absurd about those who decry the progress made by Tottenham under Pochettino just because it has not yet been adorned by a trophy."

Pochettino himself has sought to draw a definite distinction between progress and trophies. In February, he described managing Spurs as a "process," one he deemed "more than winning a title," per BBC Sport.

It's debatable whether United, the most successful club in terms of league titles in England, would draw the same distinction between development and achievement.

Even so, there are things about Pochettino that would find a home at Old Trafford. His teams play an expressive brand of football made possible by a brave faith in giving young players a chance.

Dele Alli, Kieran Trippier and Harry Winks have all made strides on Pochettino's watch. The same is true of England internationals Harry Kane and Eric Dier.

United's history is full of examples of youthful talent from the Busby Babes to the Class of '92 of which Neville was a member.

Neville's isn't the only endorsement the former Argentina international has received from a United great. Sir Alex Ferguson, who guided the club to 13 Premier League titles, called Pochettino "the best manager in the Premier League" in 2016, MP for Tottenham David Lammy told the The Spurs Show podcast (h/t Goal's Chris Davie).

As long as some of the biggest names from United's successful past continue to tout his credentials, Pochettino will keep being linked with taking over at Old Trafford one day.
