Preview
There's no overwhelming favourite to win the 2018 Kentucky Derby, but there are plenty of serious contenders in a deep field.
Kentucky handicapper Byron King provided a quick overview of all 20 contenders:
There will be high hopes for the undefeated Justify who is hugely talented and beat Bolt d’Oro by three lengths in the Santa Anita Derby. He did not race as a two-year old and has just three races to his name, but the raw talent is there for all to see.
Magnum Moon is also unbeaten and secured an emphatic win in the Arkansas Derby. The talented colt won by four lengths, but a tendency to drift into the middle is a concern.
Track announcer Jimmy McNerney said he's still learning:
Both horses will have to break the "Curse of Apollo" if they are to win. The only horse ever to win the Kentucky Derby, having not started a race as a two-year old, was Apollo in 1882, per Jonathan Lintner at Horse Racing Nation.
The two horses have also drawn decent starting positions. Justify will start from the No. 7 spot and Magnum Moon is at 16.
Mendelssohn is another serious contender, and he has already shown his class by winning the UAE Derby. The colt set a new track record, and his huge margin of victory was also a new landmark, per Greg Wood at the Guardian.
He has been hotly tipped by horse-racing analyst Joe Kristufek:
Mendelssohn will start from 14th position after arriving in Kentucky on Monday after a lengthy journey, per Churchill Downs PR:
Ryan Moore will ride Mendelssohn once again, and trainer Aidan O'Brien has said he's fine despite the unexpected change to his trip, per David Jennings at the Racing Post.
Mendelssohn may take some beating in Kentucky, and if he does claim victory, he'll become the first horse shipped from Europe to win the race.
