Recap
Manager Zinedine Zidane didn't rotate his squad with an eye on next week's UEFA Champions League meeting with Bayern Munich, but the European champions still struggled on Wednesday, coming from behind to earn a draw.
Inaki Williams gave Athletic the lead against the run of play with a delightful chip that drew admiration from fans and pundits alike. Football writer Lars Pollmann enjoyed it:
The Basques sat back very deep and appeared to be inviting trouble, but Real were unable to answer for large stretches of the match. Zidane introduced Isco and Gareth Bale in the second half, but Athletic still appeared to be headed for the win with five minutes left on the clock.
Ronaldo had other plans, however, redirecting a shot from Luka Modric with his heel and giving goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga no chance.
Per ESPN's Gabriele Marcotti, he has scored against some top opposition:
Perhaps the most eye-catching result on Wednesday was Getafe's win at the Mestalla, as Loic Remy bagged a brace to lead the side past Los Che. Footy Accumulators couldn't believe it:
Getafe have quietly enjoyed a fantastic season, and the win moved them just six points behind Villarreal and the final Europa League ticket.
With five matches left to play, the Azulones are suddenly in a position for an unlikely run. Villarreal will still face Valencia, Barcelona and Real Madrid, so Getafe may well have the advantage at this point.
Eibar are only two points off Getafe after their win over Espanyol, who have a nine-point gap between them and the relegation spots.
