Sunday Recap
Atletico ensured their qualification for next season's UEFA Champions League with a victory over Levante on Sunday:
The hosts opened the scoring on 33 minutes, as Vitolo burst into the box and found Angel Correa, who fired home.
Atletico appealed for a penalty just before half-time as Antoine Griezmann went to ground, but instead the referee opted to show the Frenchman a yellow card for diving. Football correspondent Tom Allnutt said it was a deserved booking:
Griezmann made amends three minutes into the second half, as he scored Atletico's second. Sime Vrsaljko supplied the cross, and the Frenchman smashed a half-volley into the top corner.
Manager Diego Simeone replaced Griezmann on the hour mark with Fernando Torres, who received a warm welcome from the home fans. The striker was appearing for the first time since announcing his decision to leave the club at the end of the season.
Those cheers grew even louder when Torres sealed the win on 77 minutes. He volleyed home Correa's cross and scored his 100th La Liga goal in the process, per Opta:
It's another win and yet another clean sheet for Atletico. ESPN FC's Dermot Corrigan showed how impressive they are at home:
Real Madrid are just four points further back after a straightforward win over bottom side Malaga at La Rosaleda Stadium.
Manager Zinedine Zidane opted to rest his big stars for the game, with Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Luka Modric all left out of the Real Madrid squad:
Madrid ensured their star men weren't missed and took the lead through a superb free-kick from Isco. The Spain international curled the ball over the wall and into the bottom corner on 29 minutes.
The former Malaga man seemed to apologise for the goal afterwards, as shown by Goal:
Real Madrid survived a scare just before half-time, as an awful error by Casemiro put Manuel Iturra clean through on goal, but Keylor Navas blocked his shot.
Casemiro made amends in the second half by netting Real Madrid's second goal. Karim Benzema started the good team move, finding Isco, who cut it back to the Brazilian to fire home.
Football writer Graham Ruthven was impressed with Isco's display:
Malaga pulled one back in stoppage time through Diego Rolan, but it was just a consolation for the hosts, who remain bottom on just 17 points and look certain to be relegated.
Despite the late goal, it was a good night for Real Madrid, as they picked up all three points and managed to rest key players ahead of their upcoming UEFA Champions League semi-final against Bayern Munich on April 25.
