Bayern Munich Advance to UCL Semi-Finals with Scoreless Draw Against Sevilla

Gianni VerschuerenApr 11, 2018

Bayern Munich and Sevilla played out a scoreless draw in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday, a result that saw the German side advance to the last four of the tournament. They won the first leg 2-1 in Spain.

The Bundesliga champions were the better side throughout the contest and were never truly troubled by Sevilla. Joaquin Correa was sent off late on for the visitors.

Here are the key takeaways from Wednesday's clash.

Sevilla Target Lewandowski Early

Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski will not have enjoyed the overly rough treatment he received early in the contest, leading to two yellow cards within the first 12 minutes.

Gabriel Mercado and Steven N'Zonzi both showed no mercy, and the Poland international required treatment after an assault on his ankles from the latter.

Things didn't get better later in the half, as the Bayern forward was injured in a clash of heads with Sergio Escudero and claimed a penalty after a charge from Clement Lenglet.

Lewandowski would last 77 minutes and take a few more knocks along the way before he was finally given a rest.

Bayern Cruise, Don't Score in 1st Half

While the fans at the Allianz Arena put on a good show in the first half, the action on the pitch couldn't match them.

Bayern were the better team and had a handful of good chances, with the best of the lot coming at the end of the half when Jesus Navas made a great block on Franck Ribery.

Sevilla also had a few looks but barely troubled goalkeeper Sven Ulreich. Their best chance came through Franco Vazquez, who fired a shot wide.

The lack of goals was a surprise, though:

Tempers Flare

Things got heated early in the second half when Correa threw an elbow at Ulreich for no particular reason and the goalkeeper didn't take kindly to it.

An altercation ensued, setting the tone for a fiery half of football:

The emotions would eventually get the better of Correa, who let his frustrations out on Javi Martinez and deservedly received his marching orders in the 92nd minute

Sevilla Try but Fall Short

The closest Sevilla came to a much-needed goal was when Correa hit the crossbar after 60 minutes, and apart from a brief spell of good play surrounding that chance, Bayern controlled proceedings.

It wasn't a vintage performance from the German champions, but it was easily good enough to qualify for the next round.

What's Next

Bayern Munich will host Borussia Monchengladbach on the Bundesliga on Saturday, while Sevilla take on Villarreal in a key La Liga match on the same day.
