Ray Borg Talks Conor McGregor Bus Attack Injuries, Backlash from Trolls and More
UFC flyweight Ray Borg opened up on The MMA Hour (h/t MMA Fighting's Shaun Al-Shatti) about the eye injury he suffered during Conor McGregor's bus attack last Thursday prior to last Saturday's UFC 223.
UFC had to remove Borg from the card due to "multiple corneal abrasions." Borg explained to Ariel Helwani how he initially didn't think much of the injury to his eye until the pain persisted:
"My eye was a little irritated, but I didn’t really think much of it, and it wasn’t until later that day that the small shards and particles of glass that were on my cornea were what really caused the irritation. I personally didn’t even want to get looked at by a doctor, but as I was trying to get on with my weight cut, my eye just started killing me and I was advised to go see a doctor and get checked out."
Borg's comments came in response to those who tried to downplay his injury's legitimacy. In a clip from UFC's Embedded series, which featured McGregor's attack, Borg is shown briefly and doesn't appear injured. He is first shown at the 1:58 mark (warning: post contains profanity):
The 24-year-old posted a copy of a doctor's report Saturday to confirm the severity of his abrasions:
Borg told Helwani those close to him said he should ignore anybody questioning his injury but that he felt the need to speak up.
"I was always told don't feed the trolls, don't feed the trolls," he said. "But it had gotten to the point where some of these people were just getting so outrageous, so outrageous that I had to defend myself."
Borg also discussed the impact he believes McGregor has had on UFC as a whole, saying the former lightweight champion has led to "a great big deal of new people watching this sport" but has also created "a great big deal of dumb people watching this sport."
New York City police charged McGregor with three counts of misdemeanor assault and one count of felony criminal mischief following the attack, and he was released from custody after posting $50,000 bail.
