Manchester United Transfer News: Latest on Marcus Rashford Exit Rumours

Gianni VerschuerenApr 9, 2018

Exit rumours regarding Marcus Rashford have again surfaced, with the latest speculation saying the Manchester United forward is "becoming increasingly disillusioned" with his role under manager Jose Mourinho.

According to the Mirror's David McDonnell, a club source suggested his minor role in the 3-2 win over Manchester City on Saturday was the latest in a line of disappointments, and the academy product is considering his future: "Marcus was really unhappy with being left out for the derby. If Mourinho is still there next season, Marcus might not be, as he wants to start every game."

Per the report, the 20-year-old has made the second-most appearances of any United player this season, but only 22 of his 43 games have been starts. He came off the bench against City for the final eight minutes.

According to McDonnell, England manager Gareth Southgate has "privately expressed concern" about the situation, as Rashford's role as a depth option will not give him any momentum heading into the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

In February, Matt Hughes of The Times reported Rashford was stalling on signing a new contract as he was concerned about his lack of minutes. Club sources soon shut down the speculation, though, per ESPN FC.

Rashford's role has only decreased since the arrival of Alexis Sanchez in January, a transfer that shook up the entire squad. While fans were ecstatic when the Chile international signed, some are starting to have doubts, like this fan writer for the Manchester Evening News:

The Red Devils lost all momentum following his arrival, leading to a UEFA Champions League exit against Sevilla. The 29-year-old is starting to settle, though, and has been excellent since the end of the international break, so he won't be benched for Rashford anytime soon.

The youngster is still under contract until 2020, so he's in no position to force United's hand should Mourinho stay on and his situation go unchanged. There would be many suitors if he publicly expressed his desire to move; but given his immense talent, the Red Devils would hold out for a huge fee.

It's worth noting he hasn't made any public comments about his lack of starts at this point, even when the speculation ramped up in February. At this stage, a departure seems unlikely despite these latest rumours.
