Report: Conor McGregor Negotiating New UFC Contract Prior to Bus Attack, Arrest
UFC star Conor McGregor was in negotiations on a new deal with the UFC prior to his outburst at UFC 223's media day that left two fighters injured and led to his arrest.
MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani reported "several stumbling blocks remained" regarding McGregor's contract but that the company was optimistic the two sides could reach an agreement in time for Friday's 25th anniversary press conference.
During an interview Friday on ESPN's Get Up, UFC president Dana White said the company was prepared to allow McGregor to fight as a featherweight, lightweight or welterweight or potentially challenge for the lightweight title he was forced to vacate. White also denied McGregor's outburst was part of a planned stunt in conjunction with the UFC, instead calling it "the last stunt on earth we would ever pull":
Helwani wrote McGregor's contract extension "is now on ice" following his actions at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
McGregor smashed a window on a bus carrying fighters and UFC personnel after throwing multiple objects at the vehicle. Helwani reported on Thursday that McGregor was attempting to confront UFC lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov, who was on the bus, after Nurmagomedov confronted the Irishman's teammate and friend, Artem Lobov, earlier in the week.
The UFC announced on Thursday that Michael Chiesa and Ray Borg suffered injuries during the incident that forced them off Saturday's UFC 223 card, and the company removed Lobov from the event for his role in the situation.
New York police charged McGregor with three counts of misdemeanor assault and one count of felony criminal mischief. He posted $50,000 bail and was released from custody following a court appearance Friday.
McGregor hasn't fought in the UFC since defeating Eddie Alvarez for the UFC lightweight championship at UFC 205 in November 2016.
