La Liga Table 2018 Week 31: Updated Standings Following Friday's Results

Tom SunderlandApr 6, 2018

Malaga's hopes of La Liga survival were dealt a major blow on Friday after Adrian Lopez scored in the 85th minute to lift Deportivo de La Coruna to a dramatic 3-2 win over their relegation rivals.

Week 31 of La Liga's season got off to a flyer as Depor moved up to 18th and within five points of safety thanks to Adrian's brace, with Clarence Seedorf tasting his first victory as the club's manager.

Arsenal loanee Lucas Perez opened the scoring for Depor after he converted an early penalty, but Diego Rolan hit back on two occasions as it looked as though the teams were set to share the spoils.

Recap

After beating Villarreal on Sunday to take their first win of 2018, Malaga's joy and hopes of Premier League survival proved to be short-lived as Adrian exacted a cruel, late blow upon Deportivo's guests.

Luis Hernandez gave away a penalty after only six minutes for pulling an opponent's jersey, and Perez stepped up to convert the resulting spot-kick.

Rolan was in the right place at the right time to poke home at the back post just before half-time. Depor waited another 30 minutes before Adrian netted his first thanks to a beautifully scythed ball across from the left by Pedro Mosquera.

Uruguayan Rolan displayed a deft touch to convert his second at the front post—Samu Garcia assisting this time—and football blogger Jonas Giaever highlighted a potentially awkward arrival for him next season at the Riazor:

Winger Borja Valle replaced Mosquera with 10 minutes remaining and cut a smart run inside to tee up Adrian for a late second, Seedorf's tactics playing their part in Depor's delight.

OptaJose marked a rare scoring accomplishment for Adrian, the twice-capped Spain international who has spent the last few seasons on loan in his native Spain from Porto:

The midfielder hasn't always displayed his best during that spell, but he was the hero for Seedorf's Deportivo on Friday as their survival efforts were done a world of good.

Both teams have seven games left in which to close the secure their futures in La Liga, although Malaga's hopes look considerably direr after Friday's result.
