Ernesto Valverde Says 'Nothing Is Done' After Barcelona Thrash Roma 4-1 in UCL

Rory MarsdenApr 5, 2018

Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde has insisted Barcelona deserved their 4-1 victory over Roma in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg at the Camp Nou on Wednesday.

However, he added that, with the return leg at the Stadio Olimipco still to come, Barca are far from through to the semi-finals.

It was not a complete performance from the hosts in Catalonia, and they were helped by two own goals from the Italian side.

Valverde, though, said Barca earned their victory by getting in the right positions, while he insisted he is not thinking about winning a treble despite his side still being in contention to claim La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League, per Goal's Ben Spratt:

"During the season there are all types of games—ones where you deserve more than you get and ones where you get more than you deserve. We scored the goals we deserved, they attacked us and got the goal they were looking for which made our fourth very important.

"We do not care that they were own goals. If you do not get close to the goal, you do not get own goals. If the opponent scores in their own goal, what are we supposed to do?

"I do not have any feelings of that kind [about a treble]. I see what it takes to win each game and what it took today. I'm not thinking any further than Saturday's game against Leganes—and, no matter what people think [about Roma], nothing is done. I preferred 3-0 to 4-1, so nothing is done."

Roma were already big underdogs going into their tie against Barca, and they didn't help themselves as they looked to take a result back to the Stadio Olimpico.

Own goals from Daniele De Rossi and Kostas Manolas put Barca 2-0 up before Gerard Pique tapped in from close range for the hosts' third before the hour.

Roma pulled one back through Edin Dzeko with 10 minutes remaining, but Luis Suarez then reestablished Barca's three-goal lead as he pounced on a dreadful touch in the box from Maxime Gonalons.

The Blaugrana are now in the driving seat to advance to the last four for the first time since they last won the Champions League in 2014-15.

Roma have a fine defensive record at home in Europe this season. They have not conceded a single goal at the Stadio Olimpcio in the Champions League.

However, even if Barca have an off day and Roma are able to keep another clean sheet in next week's second leg, the Serie A side would still need to score three times against a side who have conceded only three in nine matches in this year's competition.
