Trevon Duval to Enter 2018 NBA Draft After 1 Season at Duke

Kyle NewportApr 4, 2018

As the Duke Blue Devils welcome in an impressive recruiting class, they are also losing another key member of this past season's Elite Eight squad.

On Wednesday, guard Trevon Duval announced on Duke's website he will declare for the NBA draft and intends to sign with an agent. He thanked Blue Devils fans in a statement:

"I loved my time here at Duke and I enjoyed every second of it. I want to thank all of the Duke fans, thank each of my teammates – they're all brothers to me, and each of the coaches that have helped me grow as a young man both on and off the court. I hope to be part of the Duke brotherhood the rest of my life."

Coach Mike Krzyzewski wished his star the best in a statement:

"We wish Trevon the very best. He showed unbelievable improvement, especially at the end of the year. His athleticism and his ability to guard at the next level will help him. We know that great things will happen for Trevon as he embarks on his pro career and will be watching and supporting him every step of the way."

The team also sent Duval off with a farewell tweet:

He averaged 10.3 points, a team-leading 5.6 assists, 1.5 steals and 2.0 rebounds per game in his lone season in Durham. When the spotlight was brightest, he upped his game, averaging 13 points and 6.3 assists during the NCAA tournament run.

Duval showed plenty of potential as a freshman, especially when it comes to running the point, but he has room to improve. While he shot 42.8 percent from the floor, the 6'3", 186-pound guard shot just 29 percent from beyond the arc and 59.6 percent from the line.

The Blue Devils were on the cusp of a Final Four this past season, but now they will have some reloading to do. Marvin Bagley III has already declared for the draft and Grayson Allen will move on after a four-year run in college.

Duval becomes Coach K's latest one-and-done star. He joins the likes of Kyrie Irving, Austin Rivers, Jabari Parker, Jahlil Okafor, Brandon Ingram, Jayson Tatum and Bagley. The good news for Bagley and Duval is that all of those other freshman stars wound up being lottery picks.

Bleacher Report's Jonathan Wasserman ranked Duval as the 35th-best prospect at the beginning of March.
