City's bus was set upon trying to enter the ground, "where the greeting was at its fiercest," according to James Robson of the Manchester Evening News.
Liverpool have since issued a statement on the club's official website offering a condemnation of the scenes "in the strongest possible terms," as well as making an apology to City manager Pep Guardiola.
This unsavoury incident has provided a rocky start to what should be the standout tie of the Champions League last eight, a celebration of football between arguably the two most dynamic attacking sides left in the tournament.
