Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid Crush Juventus in Champions League Quarter-Final

Timothy RappApr 3, 2018

Real Madrid all but locked up their place in the Champions League semifinals on Tuesday, winning their first-leg quarterfinal against Juventus, 3-0, at the Allianz Stadium in Turin.

Cristiano Ronaldo put forth a sublime display, notching a brace and assisting on Marcelo's decisive tally in the convincing win for Los Blancos.

Juventus now will not only have to travel to the Santiago Bernabeu down three goals on aggregate, they'll also have to do so without key attacker Paulo Dybala, who will be ineligible to play after he was sent off for picking up two yellow cards on Tuesday.

Here's what you need to know from Real Madrid's big win.

It's Ronaldo's World and We're Just Watching Highlights in it

To say the Portuguese superstar was brilliant on Tuesday would be an understatement. Just three minutes into the game, Isco found room down the left and flashed a cross into the box. Ronaldo, laying in waiting, stabbed his foot at the pass and sent it spinning past a helpless Gianluigi Buffon for the game's first goal.

But that was just an appetizer. In the 64th minute, Ronaldo cooked up his five-star masterpiece.

This time, it was Dani Carvajal sending in the cross, though it was high and behind Ronaldo. No matter. He simply rose up, smashed the ball with a stunning bicycle kick and doubled Madrid's lead.

So good was that goal that even the Juventus supporters had to begrudgingly appreciate the moment of wonder they'd just witnessed:

For good measure, it was Ronaldo with the 72nd-minute pass that sent Marcelo through on goal, extending Madrid's lead to three in the process. Ronaldo was special on Tuesday.

No Dybala or Sergio Ramos for the Return Leg

The aforementioned red card for Dybala after his second yellow left Juventus down a man, already trailing 2-0, but the bigger impact will be his absence in the return leg. Coming back against Real Madrid is a tall enough task. Take away one of Juventus' most thrilling attackers and the task grows taller.

Frankly, Juventus were lucky the final score wasn't far worse, as Madrid missed several opportunities to widen the gap significantly after Dybala was sent off.

Los Blancos will be without a key player themselves in the return leg, however, as Sergio Ramos received a yellow card in a second straight game, meaning the vital defender won't be around for the matchup in Madrid.

As ESPN's Dermot Corrigan noted, that could mean Madrid will be forced to roll with the inexperienced Jesus Vallejo:

It will also mean Los Blancos are without a player who was superb on Tuesday, as B/R's Sam Tighe observed:

It's certainly a loss that could play a factor when these teams next meet.

Juventus are Probably Done and Dusted

For Juventus to so much as force extra time next Wednesday, they'll need to put up a 3-0 scoreline in the next matchup. To win, they'll need to score at least four goals while maintaining a three-goal advantage.

It's certainly possible, but keep in mind that Madrid has been beaten by three or more goals just once this season, a 3-0 loss to Barcelona on Dec. 23. And only four clubs (Barca, Tottenham, Real Betis and Girona) have so much as scored three goals against Los Blancos this campaign. No club has put up four on them.

Crazier things have happened, of course, but a Juventus comeback in Madrid would be the stuff of legend.

What's Next?

Real Madrid next faces Atletico Madrid on Sunday in La Liga play before facing Juventus again on Wednesday, April 11. Juventus, meanwhile, faces Benevento on Saturday before their meeting with Los Blancos.
