Manchester United Transfer News: Latest David De Gea Contract Rumours

Gill ClarkApr 2, 2018

Manchester United are reportedly set to make goalkeeper David De Gea their second highest earner by offering him a new five-year deal worth £350,000 a week.

The Red Devils could open negotiations this month with Real Madrid having lost interest in the Spain international, according to Daniel Cutts at The Sun.

Alexis Sanchez is Manchester United's highest earner on £505,000 a week, but the club are ready to spend big to keep hold of De Gea and have freed up some funds by terminating Zlatan Ibrahimovic's contract early.

The Swede was earning wages of £220,000 per week, making him one of the highest-paid players in the Premier League, per Mick Gadd at the Mirror.

De Gea is widely considered to be one of the best goalkeepers in the world and has become one of the club's most important players since joining from Atletico Madrid in 2011.

The Premier League showed how he tops the charts for clean sheets this season:

Football on BT Sport showed just why he is so highly rated:

Real Madrid have long been credited with an interest in the goalkeeper, and he came close to a move to the Santiago Bernabeu in 2015, only for the deal to break down at the last minute.

Football writer Liam Canning is surprised Manchester United have been able to keep hold of him for so long:

However, the Spanish champions appear to have turned their attentions away from De Gea and are now interested in signing Roma's Alisson, per Marca's Jose Felix Diaz and Hugo Cerezo.

Meanwhile, De Gea has spoken recently about how he feels respect and affection in England that is not as noticeable in Spain, per Indy Football:

Keeping hold of De Gea and securing his long-term future is vital for United if they are to have any chance of overhauling Manchester City in the Premier League and achieving success in Europe.

The club have fallen short in recent years, but De Gea's performances have remained exemplary, and investing in his future is one of the soundest investments the Red Devils can make.
