Vivek Ranadive Discusses Decision to Close Doors During Shooting Protest

Tim DanielsMar 23, 2018

Sacramento Kings owner Vivek Ranadive expressed support for the protest that took place outside Golden 1 Center over the death of 22-year-old Stephon Clark, who was shot by two police officers this week.

Doors were closed to the arena after protesters blocked entrances. On Friday, Sam Amick of USA Today provided comments from Ranadive, who said there wasn't a perfect solution after up to 15,000 fans were turned away when the NBA decided not to cancel the game.

"There's obviously never a right decision in this type of situation, and on the one hand there's been a life lost and you can't just go about life in terms of it being business as usual, because it really isn't," he said. "A young man has been killed under these circumstances. But then on the other hand, you think that maybe this is an opportunity to bring people together."

Sacramento Police responded to a call Sunday night about a suspect allegedly breaking car windows and forcing entry into a residence, per CNN.

Video shows officers making contact with Clark in his grandmother's driveway. He then fled to the backyard and was pursued by the officers, who believed they saw him holding a gun.

Police told Drew Bollea of CBS Sacramento a total of 20 rounds were fired and several hit Clark. His cell phone was the only item recovered at the scene.

Along with the demonstration outside the arena, protesters also blocked a local freeway in both directions during rush hour, according to Laurel Wamsley of NPR.

The Kings showcased Ranadive's remarks to the crowd that did make it inside the Golden 1 Center before the doors were closed Thursday night:

Sacramento small forward Garrett Temple said after the game he agreed with the protest "100 percent."

"If I didn't have a job to do, I'd probably be out there with them, peacefully protesting because what's going on has to stop, it has to stop," he told reporters.

Temple went on to say there's a need for change because police "unfortunately view black and brown men as a threat when they certainly are not."
